Some of my marans eggs have spots, some don't. I think the goal is for a uniform dark color, shiny, and with a roundish shape out of adult hens. I don't know about the other dark egg laying breeds. I do know that all of my marans (BCM, GCM, BTB) are friendly and naturally tame.
nice color. hope they stay that dark for youMy oldest black tail buff marans pullets from this year's hatch are starting to lay! It's so exciting finding the cute little pullet eggs. I took this photo in full sun. They look darker in the house, but I use full sun lighting to judge all of my Marans eggs since indoor lighting varies so much. I have more pullets that haven't started to lay yet. If they all lay no lighter than these, then I'll be extremely happy. Next year's pullets should lay darker since I'll be aligning the egg color genes by breeding back to the parent birds.
I expect their egg color will stay about the same at this point except at the end of their lay cycle. These girls are out of my lighter egg laying hen. I'm still waiting for the babies out of my darkest BTB egg laying G-1 hen to mature.
