geebs~

I have just started free ranging my birds approx 3 weeks ago. I have noticed that the Marans eggs (who are in a heavy molt by the way) have darkened up just in that short amount of time. I also noticed the other day when making breakfast that the yolks are a deeper yellow.......yes I finally ate one of my Marans eggs.....it only took me years to do it. It was delicious!!!!!!!!

This sounds like they have a mixed genotype, and two bad faults. OK for producing dark eggs, but as Marans, no way.

David~ Couple of silly questions for ya...and I kind of feel silly for asking but it has been on my mind for sometime so hear goes.......

What should a person do with their Marans that end up having too dark of eyes? As you know, sometimes you get birds with the correct eye color and sometimes you get birds with dark eyes and it is their only fault but they have excellent feather color and conformation for Marans.....are they useful for anything in a Marans breeding program or they just destined to be a dark egg layer in the laying flock?
Thanks in advance!

OK- who is going to send me some eggs? I've been trying to avoid the whole marans craze- but I can't put it off much longer. I don't care if I have mutts- I just want THOSE EGGS!!!!

I just started reading this thread! I have a 20 wk old Cuckoo Maran cockerel that you could start your flock with if you are interested! PM me if you are interested!

Pinkchick: Didn't you have the rich feeling eating those super darkies? Now the egg buyers are in trouble... (less for them).... I love my orangey yolk marans eggies with toast in the morning... I can hardly wait... (DRAT! now I am drooling on myself)

Ah, ok, well I know nothing about it but I do see posts and listings occasionally from people who say they have birds which come from that bloodline.

My birds who free range produce eggs with a very different yolk consistency and color. They also produce some blood spots however. But the yolks of my hens who are free ranging have a very orange color and firm yolk. I will try to snap a picture of the difference this weekend.

With regard to the shell color, the only difference I have noticed is with stress factors and where I live it is the heat in the summer. They stop laying dark as soon as it gets really hot.

Hi there. Thank you! I'm not selling any eggs from my flock just now. All I am trying to do currently is find homes for some of my Roosters

However, there are lots of nice people who are selling hatching eggs. The eggs you see in that picture are Black Copper Marans eggs and that variety does usually produce very dark eggs, but there are other Marans varieties as well. This web site shows the different varieties and has pictures of each.

The anticipation of what they will lay and what type of egg color I will get from the 2nd generation breeding (will I go forward or backward with egg color

) and which rooster I will want to pair each of them with; this is what I find the most fun about breeding the BCM Marans.
