Dark Egg Breeds Thread

So, Rustywoman and Geebs,
Have you noticed that your hens passed their egg shape and size to their offspring? It doesn't say on the French site what genes are involved and if the Rooster also carries genes that will influence the size and shape. I suppose they do.

I should have made a note of it.. I have to admit, I didn't. I will let you know.

As much as I like the round little golf balls you would think I would find it noteworthy.

Guilty also of not paying attention! I have so many birds that I feel like I am doing good just to get them washed up and refrigerated every day.

But I am going to start keeping track of the nice ones and find out who gets the extra special treats. LOL I just read a thread about food color in the vent to know who is laying what egg. I am going to try that.

I have a spy cam but there always seems to be a fluffy butt in front of the lens at the wrong time!

THANKS
No those eggs are from April; from the parents. I am still waiting, waiting for the spring hatch to lay. But it was 106 degrees here yesterday and will be today, so it won't be this week, that's for sure. They will be 6 months in September and this flock has always started laying in the 6th month so I expect they will be the same.

drom, this coming fall I plan on single mating all my Marans and keeping a record of egg size and shape and even weight of the egg. Will record all variations so can get an idea of some of the factors involved. I have an incubator already setup with dividers so all the eggs will be seperated the last three days, and will toe punch all chicks fo reference later. This will be a pretty good size test so should get some good info. for the future.

Oh thanks for sharing this! Weighing them and using the dividers is such a great practice. I should really be doing the same as I am primarily interested in egg cultivation. I guess if egg size is genetic and the genes for the shape are incomplete dominant, then you could theoretically tell when you single mate what kind of influence the rooster has had on egg shape when the offspring lay. Great info Don. I hope you post a few pics of your progress.
