Dark Egg Breeds Thread

I know.. I keep telling myself that.. Just too tired of hatching. I can send them to you.

you know, I would hatch day and night with that nifty little incubator if I had a place to send the roosters. I don't butcher them and it is just about impossible to find homes for roosters. I feel like it holds me back in terms of what I could do with this flock, but I can't help it. I'm really a weenie when it comes to determining their fate. I can't do it.

Ya... I am kinda lucky that way... There is an auction within 5 miles of my house.. I know they are going to get eaten but ya know... It is a short time.. now my girlfriend is taking them and finishing them in a grow pen. She is a vet and also knows how to humanely cruelty free butcher them.. That is what I am doing now... I have no worries. I can grow them out and eat them as long as she butchers and I provide the first 8 weeks, she finishes them and we share them... A real good situation if I say so myself... I am a weenie also... I just put them in cages and she bags them and puts them in my freezer.

I know the auction buyer and he and his wife always handle my birds carefully until they are butchered... They are the ones that usually bid out my marans. I am okay with it as the woman and her husband are so careful in the handling of the birds.. I just know that they are careful at butcher time. I would rather they get butchered if they are culls than for someone to breed them... If there is a good one... I usually pen it separate and really boost the writeup on it so it goes for breeding.. otherwise I market pen them for auction.

Well, we all eat chicken .... may as well make use of those roosters! You know you feed them well, and they are well cared for. It is much better meat than the grocery store has. I am happy to have a freezer full now, for winter. Now I have others asking me for meat, as well as for eggs.

Tell me about it, I have someone who wants to buy ALL of my culls tomorrow, and I'm thinking that's nice, I really do want to get rid of them ASAP, but I also want my own meat too.

Anyone here done much crossing of different breeds on each other? (penedesenca x marans, etc) I've only seen one outcome, and it laid the neatest, most blotchy eggs.

I eat 'em...........and you know what.....they taste just like chicken but better! LoL! I will not be the one to do the deed but I will assist in all other aspects of the butchering and cleaning once the head and feet are gone, I know....I'm a whimp, but I just can't see their little faces.

Congrats on the egg drom.....it is lovely! They all are!

I'm not too excited with egg color this year from my youngest blue coppers, thinking of holding off on all hatching egg orders and waiting till the new batch of BCM's start laying and use them to cross with the Blues and see how that helps with egg color. Just don't know if I am happy with them or not yet, pretty put off with my 3rd gen gals. I don't understand egg color stayed consistent until this generation. Maybe my project pen of the blues and splashes should have been an inclination to me but I was hoping for the best, so I guess it's back to the drawing board.

How ever I am estatic with my new generation of Welsummers and their egg color.....will try to get some photos of those up pretty soon.
