Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Anyone else gonna help me with deciding between Marans OR Welsummers? Are the Welsummers yellow legged or white legged?

Welsummers produce lots of eggs and they are very talkative... very friendly... They like to be up in your face..they lay more eggs than a Marans... Marans are quiet..they are not as in your pocket...most of em.... but they are really nice... My suggestion...get both... you can't be dissappointed in the egg color with a proper black copper or the quantity if you go Wellie... both breeds have merit... I had both and I loved all the eggs but I had close nieghbors...so the quiet birds one...It just simply depends on YOU what the best one will be... Both are great birds!! wellies are straw...not yellow

what part???? It matters not to me... I like my marans.. my wellies SQUAAAAAWED And hollered when they had eggies.. my marans are quiet as churchmice... Wade line of course... Davis line hens as I recall were more vocal...

This is the only thing I would disagree with a little....though they can be friendly, they are not super snuggly birds, they are not flighty but they can be very energetic birds, more so than a Marans. In my opinion they do not lay better than the Marans. Egg color consistency is better than that of a Marans yes. I get approx. 3 eggs per week from each hen that is laying, my Marans lay better than my Wellies, hands down, but OH yes, Wellies are talkers, even the roosters join in on the beautiful egg songs with the girls, they are very proud birds when it comes to announcing the arrival of an egg. The Wellie roosters are great protectors of their ladies and flocks and both the girls and boys do very well freeranging and foraging. They also tolerate the heat and the cold that we experience here in the PNW very well. Oh and their legs are yellow. But I agree with you Jan, get one of each.....oh heck get 2 or 3 of each.
