It is no different than any other breed. I don't see what the big deal is.
For cryin' out loud ..... they are chickens!
Breed whatever you want to .....
I will !

Now Kathy I know you have a best collection of chickens in the world and how if you hatched some Barred Rocks of your special lines and they had green legs or laid an olive egg?

It is just chickens sure but then what do you do? You say oh the seller - and then the seller - can he figure out who is still a pure of his? Or no? It is okay to dis-agree I am having strong opinions about this and I only with to say them but not argue and so there is my opinion that it is a matter of responsible stewardship.

For me.

The thing is .... anyone can do whatever they want to with their own chickens. There are no, "chicken laws," that they are breaking. I will do what I want to with mine, and have no problem with others doing whatever they want to do with theirs. It should not be an argument. Yes, I do have a few special chickens, and I intend to keep them pure..... however, if others want eggs from them and do something else with them ..... OH WELL ! ! ! Do what ever you want to with yours, and I will do whatever I want to with mine......

Just sayin' ........

Yes one more thing to add I am breeding Olive Eggers, but the single comb peeps are strictly deald with - they are my layers or they are soup or snake food or tiger food but they will not be possible to go to somebody who says 'now I have the roosty I need for my Marans girls!'

I know this may sound dumb but what is DE?

Diatomacious Earth (often referred to as "DE") is an off white talc-like powder that is the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton. When sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton (such as bed bugs, ants or fleas) it gets caught between their little exoskeleton joints. As they move, the diatomaceous earth acts like razor blades and cuts them up. But it doesn't hurt mammals. We can eat it. We do eat it! It's in lots of grain based foods because lots of grains are stored with diatomaceous earth to keep the bugs from eating the grain!

Thanks for the info. Here's a harder question.... Welsummers or marans? I want one or the other just can't decide which. I want the better layer, hardier, more friendly breed with the least amount of negatives. Also are Welsummers legs yellow or white? I've seen both that were SUPPOSED to be Welsummers.

I have no experience at all with Welsummers. My Marans are all very friendly, winter hardy, and generally good layers. Mine have slowed down due to molting and less daylight, but they are considered pretty good layers. I have never had a problem with my Marans. I really do like them .......
