Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Pinkchick,
Here is one of my roo, Whiskey. I was given these birds from a friend who bought the parents as 'from exhibition lines', but who knows? Will need to get pics of the hens.

Wow, he's beautiful. I don't know anything about the standard but he looks quite nice to me.

I have a girl that just constantly teases me with her egg. Day after day I go to collect and see the darkest egg ever. Then, when I pick it up, it is one of those with white on the other side. You know, the chalky kinda lookin' stuff. 1/2 dark egg, 1/2 chalky color.

Don't you hate that. Sometimes those 50/50s are super dark too.
Do you know what drives me crazy, is when I am walking up to the nest and I glimpse the darkest egg my birds have ever produced way in the back of the nest box.

And I run over and take it out in to the light...... and it's about the same color as all their eggs

Because of the low light in the box their eggs look like 9s and I get fooled every time

Pretty birds and eggs. Josh, do you select the hens for breeding based on their egg color. Do you select your hatching eggs based on color?

YES! YES! Exactly what I do, too! You would think I would know better, but I still fall for it!

I think that means we're hopeful.
