Dark Egg Breeds Thread

They are just about as easy as it gets I suppose in the right climate. I inherited this tree when I bought my property 10 years ago. I've done literally nothing with it, never fertilized pruned or watered it.

And it is just covered with Poms every fall. I have read that some of them can live for decades. I hope mine does, because it took me 8 years to figure out what to do with them. I let most of them fall off the tree for years until I bought a high end very heavy, large juice press from Williams-Sonoma.
Now I have fresh Pomegranate juice every fall and it is so yummy!

I don't know how they would do in your climate. I am the foothills in Northern California and beneath the snow line, although last year we got snow. Summers are very hot here and I think the Poms like that.

Here's a pic of my Rooster, Boo, under the Pomegranate tree in the winter. They love hanging out under that tree. He is from my second generation of Black Copper Marans. His daughters are getting ready to lay. I think I will have some 3rd generation eggs in September and I am so excited.

Well drom, there's your answer! The chickens hang out under the tree, scratching, weeding, and um, fertilizing!! Second only to world peace, I would love it if someone would make a COLD TOLERANT AVOCADO TREE!!! That's the one thing I miss about CA., the fresh produce year round!!

Ahhaha! You're right! I never even thought about that.
I used to live in the Bay Area and Avocado trees will grow there, and I want one so bad but I think maybe it gets a little too cold here in the winter for them to survive.

I miss going to Fallbrook every year to get a bushel of them! Here in Missouri, they sell avocados the size of black walnuts, that are either hard as a stone or mushy, and want 89 cents EACH for them! I just wait till they're really ripe and the skin starts to turn brown, then the store discounts them to 25 cents each thinking they're bad. Just hope I'm in the mood for guacamole! Love them in omelets too!

Hi Drom, Glad to find this thread! Love it when folks send in pictures. Could you give the link for B. Davis's thread? Thanks!

Drom, Boo is beautiful .... AND that picture is gorgeous! You could blow it up and make a wall hanging!

Debi ... We lived in Fallbrook, when DH was in the USMC. I so remember picking fresh goodies from the trees there! Awww, sooo long ago!
