I wanted to get a few dark/chocolate egg layers. Either a few Welsummers or Marans. Which one lays the darker egg? My brother owns a a few Welsummers and showed me a few of their eggs. They were a nice rich brown color. He warned me Marans doesn't always lay a nice dark brown egg but more like a lighter brown. Does anyone know if that's true?

It is true I have some marans that don't lay that dark of a egg. But they usual lay a darker egg then welsummers. But I do have a couple wellies that lay a egg comparable to BCM eggs.

Cuckoo and Copper Marans both lay "chocolate" eggs, but the darkness of the brown egg will vary from bird to bird, just like the shades of light brown egg vary from Orpington to Orpington. The Marans eggs will be much darker than those laid by Orpingtons and Wyandottes, though. Welsumers lay dark eggs, but usually speckled, not a solid brown. Hope that helps!
