Dark Pieds

In one of our breeding pens we have:

India Blue Pied White-eyed split purple peacock
India Blue Peahen
India Blue Pied Peahen
Purple Peahen

I woke up in the wee hours of the morning and had been dreaming about genetics...obviously I've been thinking about it way too much!

Out of this pen, we got purples and india blues, some pied, some not. Some of the solid birds have white wing feathers. Am I correct in saying that all with white flight feathers would all have to be dark pied? My understanding is that split whites would have had to have a white parent and that the split pieds would not show white flights. Is that right?

I'll start with the purples. the split male can produce purple females from any of the hens and possible split males, and maybe pied purple hens. Can get purple males and females from the purple hen. And, produce split males from the purple hen,but you will not know this unless proven up. by that I mean breed them a few years and see if any purples are procuced. Now this takes to long and most people will not do it. For the most part they are just blues. Purple is a sex link color as well as Cameo, Peach and Violete and all will breed the same way. This does not consider the white eye or pied gene and maybe some one will give you help with that as they will be in the purples also . connerhills

Okay, I'll give it a shot on the pied and white eyed. To get a good white-eyed bird, you need two copies of the gene. It is my understanding that a pied white-eyed bird carries only one copy. Therefore, in theory, half of the birds produced will carry this gene. Now, when it comes to the pied gene, you need one copy of the white gene and one copy of the pied gene to show the pied pattern. THerefore, you will only produce any pied by crossing your male with the blue pied hen. Even then, you will end up with 1/2 pied, 1/4 white and 1/4 dark pied. The dark pied can show white flights and a white throat patch, similar to a bird that is split to white (though none of the 12 or so split offspring I have ever raised have shown the white throat patch.

male x blue hen = some purple hens, some blue hens, some split purple males, some blue males - of all these birds, some will carry white, some will carry pied, and some will carry white eyed gene. Some may carry white and white-eyed, some may carry pied and white eyed, but they will not carry all three.

male x blue pied hen = some white hens, some purple hens and some blue hens, some split purple males, some blue males, some white males. Other than the white, all other birds will be pied or dark pied and some of them will be pied white eyed.

male x purple hen = basically all the same birds as the male x blue hen, with the exception of the possibility of getting purple males and the potential genes that are carried are the same.

If I missed anything, I'm hoping someone else will jump in, but there is a lot of potential for carrying a number of genes. It really depends on what you are trying to breed for. For most, you won't know what they are carrying unless you breed them to a bird of similar genetics. Not all split white birds have a white parent. You can get split white birds from a split white bird bred to a non split bird or breeding a pied parent to a non pied parent.

Like Arbor said a person should have a goal that they are trying to obtain.. say working on purples and purple pied or white eye. You need to keep very good records and band the birds on both wings when very young ( first day , hours old ) When you have a mixed pen it is hard to know what is what and you can spend years doing something that cant be done ... connerhills

reason you need to know what color/pattern a white is. a white from purple pied pair is purple ,just white doesn't let the purple show. if you know their color then you can breed that white (purple) back to purple or purple pied........to get all purple pied ,purple, or white(purple)

Have a blue split purple Blackshoulder.. split while. He looks blue.

I didn't realize he has purple chicks until after the season. His lady is blue.

This year will have chicks with blue white eyed dark pied.

Can you talk to me about this?

We got our new ladies yesterday. A little who's the boss hut they are all okay.

I love the white flight feathers. I am looking at purple next year. I know a little1/4 purple chicks from my male. Does the female have to have purple? My lady does. Frick.

These dark pied come 2 years ago from park hollow. Excotic. Batch of eggs. That farm has purple also.
