dark stripe on egg when candling day 10

Don't feel bad! Experience is our best teacher. It is so very hard to be patient sometimes! This is the downside to being human, I guess...

I killed a cockatiel egg before, my pair never hatches out live chicks, I candled it and swore it was dead, it wasn't made me so sick

blood rings are usually a thin line at the top of the dark space(right before the light part on top).this ia assuming you are holding the egg with large end up with the light coming from the top.there will be no veining because it has all drained down to make the blood ring.i don't toss unless they are clear at day 10(nothing inside) or not developing at day 18(should be 2/3 dark with only the air sac at the top.it really takes awhile for an egg to explode or leak(unless it has a crack).hope this helps.

mtnkids: Keep on candling & learning. Candling does not mean cracking eggs open, right! I use a med/sm sized handheld 9 Led flashlight, grasp it in hand with light facing up, pinch thumb & 1st finger together to make a circle, put the egg in there to candle, be sure to move egg over some to see thru the air cell so you can see it's developement on day 7 or 8, 14 & 18 to "lockdown," & also look at how the dark mass grows on those days, along with how the egg white part gets less & less. When you learn to see those changes, then it will be very easy to decide if the egg is viable or not, as an infertile egg will be translucent unless it goes rotten in the later days. Read thru & see the very informative pictures at the beginning (first 3 I think with the sticky on them) of the Incubating & Hatching Eggs section found in the Index. Trust me, you'll get better & better at it, & it will help.

mtnkids: Sounds like it's time to stop worrying & just let them keep going, you'll learn from that too. You've got an "air sac" at the top wide end, "dark mass" chick growing (your thick ribbon), what's left of the "egg white" for moisture & nutrition at the pointed end, right! Your eggs may not be developed exactly the same as each other, give them time. What date will they be due to hatch around 21 days? I'd like to know & will be watching out for your post of hatches then.

rosco:
that is almost exactly what mine was like, only mine might have been thinner in the middle.

save the favs:
Thanks for the description. It makes sense. I was candling from the bottom (narrow end) up and that must be exactly what I was seeing, poor thing.
My eggs are due on the 9th, and from here on, I think I will candle on day 18 and only throw anything away that is clear, but I don't know if they will be because none were yesterday at all.
I haven't had much faith in these from the beginning because they are shipped eggs and it is my first time, but I guess they are doing better than I thought.

Thanks all of you for your advice and expertise. I felt really awful last night, but am trying to look at it now as a learning experience and a mistake that I surely will not make again. And like my husband said, at least I know that they are doing something because I really didn't think they were.

Well here's a story to tell you. My first time with my bator the power went out for I can't remember how long and the temp went down to 80 then after the power came back on I didn't check them and the temp went up to 110. I thought I lost them all but I still got 50%. I was so surprised when they hatched I cried for days after.
