Ack, my worst fear is developing allergies to my pets, which is not uncommon for people with my job to develop. I think I'm actually allergic to our pigeon...but all I get is hives on the arm which is easy enough to ignore or put ointment on. I am taking sleeping pills for insomnia which have an antihistamine in them. They help keep my allergies down that otherwise creep up. I can definitely tell when I miss one because not only am I wide awake, but I'm itching like mad the whole next day. Other allergy pills prescribed to me in the past (what is that big name brand...Claritin? And Flonase?) never did a thing for me. So, even if one thing doesn't work, keep trying. I sure hope you can find a workable situation for you. You may also want to get an allergy test done where they prick your skin and look for reactions. I am very, very allergic to dust mites (well, technically their dust mite poop), so pets do tend to be associated with allergies for me...especially when our oldest cat sneaks into the basement and takes a little dust bath. That may help clear up exactly what you are allergic to (ie. dander, saliva, etc.).
