There are literally thousands of tomato varieties, and more are added every year. Beef steak is supposed to be bigger, but sometimes bigger tomato varieties don't live up to their potential. Situations have to be just right.
You do have to sometimes control growth and pinch off some of the fruiting branches so the plant puts more energy into less tomatoes. I also remove some of the extra green leaves.
Bigger tomatoes are nice, but sometimes they crack easy.
I like Aunt Ruby's German green tomatoes. All the other varieties I've tried I wasn't a fan of. Everyone likes something different in tomatoes as far as taste.

Thank you both so much!! This is extremely helpful!!!Yea, beefsteak is one. There are a quite a few like that. Pink Brandy Wine is a good Heirloom one that gets really big. Parks Whopper is another hybrid. There are some other really big ones. But most of them will grow big enough ones to cover a slice of bread if they grow well. I mean Better Boy, Bush Goliath, even Celebrity, Early Girl, etc... are not huge huge, but big enough to pretty much cover a slice of bread if in good soil, fertilized and a good growing season.
I love to grow different heirlooms, and a lot of them grow really large. But, the thing with heirloom versus hybrid is they usually don't produce as abundantly, and are not as disease and insect tolerant. So, I grow some of both. The hybrids so I know I have plenty to eat and give away, and the heirloom are icing on the cake.
They are wonderful. And, they are actually good in the air fryer so that they are healthier than the traditional way.Do you ever make fried green tomatoes? I've never had them, but they always sound good.
I’ll have to try the Early Girl and maybe Brandywine next year. And yeah the cherries grow like crazy lol picked almost a whole bowl of them just today. Yesterdays addition filled the bowl. My dad eats them plain too lol I’m gonna make a BLT tonight.I always grow at least a couple of Early Girl because they are ready faster while you wait on others. And, they are pretty good to boot. Not giant but good sized. And, I like to grow the tiny ones. My favorite there is Sweet 100. They are really good, and produce so abundantly as well as really easy to grow. They are of course good in salads and stuff. But, I like to just keep a bowl of them on the counter and just grab me a few as I walk through the kitchen.
Yes. Haven't made them in a few years. They are so delicious, and ironically they are good eaten with ketchup.Do you ever make fried green tomatoes? I've never had them, but they always sound good.
I forgot to buy lettuce when I went to the store yesterday (and cream cheese. And mayo.) so it was just a BT LOL still really good though. And I did have enough mayo for the sandwich thankfully so that’s good. I just need more lol
No, I don’t. Was just mentioning how much stuff I forgot to buyDo you usually put cream cheese on a BLT? I've never tried that before, I'm a plain bacon, lettuce and tomato gal (and zero mayo, not a fan of that stuff).
