Day 16 and Confused

One egg that is on day 16 seems to have the development of a day 11-ish egg. Should I discard it or wait? I really don't want it exploding.

I'm on Day 16 as well.

The odds of it exploding from bacteria are fairly low. I've done many hatches and only had one shipped egg get "weepy." It was okay until hatch day when I removed it.

I would recommend putting in the corner, away from the other eggs. If you are absolutely certain it isn't good, crack it open/discard it. If you have any doubts I would leave it in.

I have an egg that I'm 99.9% sure did not develop past Day 3. I've left it in. I prefer to do all my "eggtopsies" at the same time when the hatch is over.

Are veins still visible and red, or do they look darker than the others?

I'd venture to guess that it has died. Early in incubation, death often results in a definite "blood ring" around the middle of the egg. But later on, when the blood vessels are better developed, the blood may remain in the vessels, but it will darken. The veins and embryo may be darker than the others.

If it's that far behind, chances are it won't catch up or thrive if it does hatch. I'd remove it.

There is a small, dark dot in the egg that doesn't appear to be moving, but the rest of the egg is fairly transparent. When I candled it before, everything was developing good, so maybe it died.

Hmm...if the rest of the egg is obviously clear, it sounds like it quit.

I have one egg right now that is confusing me. It doesn't look like it's developing as far as the embryo size (I can't see it very well though). But I see a prominent and well developed round eye (looks like day 21!). I think it's dead; I just don't know why there is such an obvious eye and nothing else. As with the other egg, I'm leaving it in.

Good luck with the rest of your hatch

I did an eggtopsy and the egg had an eye, but that was it. I have 5 others that are showing good signs, so

Thank you, and good luck with your hatch too!

Similar thing to my egg then!

Hopefully you will have 5 chicks by this Friday/Saturday! I just candled mine. I see 23 eggs with movement out of 33. I'm happy with that because a lot of them were very old eggs! Then I have 19 more blue & dark brown eggs I don't even bother candling because I can't see through them.

Oh yes I can't wait! It's all gone by so fast that it doesn't seem like it's day 17 now! That's some good fertility on your eggs. What day are you on now?

My eggs are on the same timeline as yours, I guess...today's Day 17. Set them on the evening of March 20 so the next day I counted as Day 1.

I'm always very impatient for the first hatch of the year. Weekends go by fast, though. I stop turning tomorrow!

It looks to me like all 3 of my Olive Eggers quit. Too bad she stopped laying before I could gather fresh eggs. And I'm quite sure none of the 5 Marans will hatch, for the same reason. One of them was collected on February 4th...another was undated; even older. I prolonged my hatch by a month to try and collect more, but they failed to produce anything, so in went the old eggs!

On the positive side, all 7 of my SBELs are wriggling. Half of my sexlinked Easter Eggers, too...and quite a few bantams.

What breed/s do you have?

I had the same thing happen to me. I was trying to collect hatching eggs from my olive egger, but right as I was trying to get them she decided to do a little molt and stop laying. Ah, chickens. What would we do without them? I hope the eggs do hatch- it'll be one for the books and a very nice story.

That's so interesting! So at day 17 you're supposed to be able to see movement? Mine are all translucent and I can't see much movement.

The eggs in the incubator are from a Wyandotte rooster and Amber Star, White Star, and Australorp hens, but I have many other breeds. I keep those breeds and Partridge Plymouth Rocks, Barred Rocks, EEs, and a Black Sex Link.
