In the bator I have 8 barred rocks, 1 Americana, 3 silkies/crested mixed, and 5 buff orpingtons ....and.....

4 barred rocks under a hen...all are due to hatch the same day!

Well, I wish you guys best of luck! Here's to a great hatch!

At 2pm today I will be on day two. *lol* I don't even know for sure if our eggs in the bator are fertile. If they aren't, how soon should they start smelling?

Thanks so much....I remember Day 2; how exciting! This is an addictive hobby, that's for sure. If the eggs aren't fertile you'll only see a yolk when candling at Day 7....maybe sooner. There will be no veins. They will only start smelling if they are contaminated with bacteria.

I'm crossing my fingers for you!

Thanks gumps........it is very exciting....I keep running downstairs in the basement just to see if any pipped.....I want to so bad open it up and candle them just to make sure they are okay.......

I have homework to do today...lots and just can't concentrate....

Well, three pips last night during the game, six right before bed. I was still at 6 this morning and up to 11 at last check. I will try to take and post some pictures if I get a chance.

Keep your hands out of that bator!!!

No candling allowed. Just keep telling yourself that you will slow things down if you open the bator. Have you ever heard the expression curiosity killed the cat?!?! Well, put chicken in there instead of cat! Leave your bator closed!!! I might need you to be giving me this advice come Friday!

Good luck on studying!

Well one chick is hatched and 13 more pipped. Question; How long should I leave the first one in the incubator before moving it to the brooder? I assume at least until he is dry? I am only concerned because he is climbing all over the other eggs.

I say he, because I have a sneaking suspicion that it is a male black sex link. All the feathers are black except for a small light patch on "his" head. We will see.
