Day 18.....Lockdown

T
Thank you SO much for ALL of your help! Number 7 just hatched and I have 3 more pips! There are two more eggs not doing anything yet. Today is Day 21. This bator says it holds 24. I can NOT imagine that May chicks hatching in it! I think I'm gonna have to leave the house. I am So tempted to get the cute little fluff balls out and hold them. I'll post more pics later.

Blessings,
Leslie

You will hold them very very soon!

I usually find a window to snatch them out, I say it's a good sign if you have that many pips going without a break!

I usually clean stuff to take my mind off it... I cant concentrate on reading a book but if I do/create/clean something I can get into it and stop thinking about it, lol

The barred rock that pipped has hatched but has stuff stuck on his butt. Quail have pipped but aren't doing much and no other pips from the chickens... I hope I get a couple more hatch.

Also just discovered someone knocked the temperature dial on the second bator that I have more quail eggs and a few araucanas in... I'm pretty sure they all got cooked =(

Oh nooo! I'm sorry.... Depending on how long it was turned up they might stand a chance you never know.... it takes a little bit of time to raise the internal temp of the egg, 104F internal temp is considered too high.

Candled them last night, all dead. The temperature hit something like 45 Celsius. Too hot. I think my wallaby must have been grabbing at the dial, he is at that age where everything must be investigated. I'll make sure it can't happen again.

The end of my hatch didn't go so well. The barred rocks never pipped, not sure what happened there. But anyway, I did get 7 gorgeous chicks so I'll be happy with that for my first time and just try again. I'm still very happy the malpositioned chick made it out!

The 6 quail have pipped 5/6 but not much else, they're peeping away. I hope yours got on with it Frankie.

I'm picking up some barnevelder and marans chicks today to help fill all that extra space in the brooder.

Well....it's been about 28 hours since my first chick hatched. As of now, I have 10 wild chicks, 1 egg with a pip, and 1 egg doing nothing in the bator. I have learned SO much and have enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks to everyone who gave advice and shared their experiences! Y'all definitely kept me sane and put me more at ease. I'll post pics when I finally get to hold these cute little fluff balls.

Blessing to you all,

Leslie

That's fantastic Frankie, I'm glad they're hatching for you. My quail are finally starting to zip but they're taking their time about.

Got my barnie and marans chick. And happened to stop at a feedstore that had chicks for sale... so I got another 3 chicks. 1 is a silkie, 1 welsummer, and some other cute little yellow mystery bantam. I feel much better today! Some pictures for you all.

My cheeky little Australorps. These guys already come running when I call 'chick chick chick'.

One of my new barnevelders.

How did your Welsummers go, Leslie? I'm pretty sure mine are girls - they have the eyeliner people talk about.

Love the cute chick pics!!

Both of my "Welsummer" eggs hatched earlier. My daughter got the Welsummer and Marans eggs from a breeder in Arkansas. I started with 7 of each. The breeder had written "BCM" and "Wel" on the eggs. 5 of the 7 "Wel" eggs were infertile and I culled them on day 10......so I only ended up with the 2. When the first "Wel" egg hatched earlier today I thought it looked really dark. After the 2nd one hatched, I realized the first one was actually another BCM :( I'm still waiting on the only little Welsummer to dry so I can determine it's sex. I'm praying it's a girl, although it kind of had a roo-ish looking comb when it hatched.

I still have one BCM egg in the bator that hasn't pipped yet. I'm leaving the chicks in with it overnight. If no pip in the morning, I'll move the chicks to the brooder and candle the egg. I'm thrilled that I have 11 out of the 12 that went into "Lockdown". This has been a lot of fun. I'll definitely be doing it again:)

Would love to see pics of your fluff balls!

Whatever problems afflicted my chicken hatch didn't bother the quail, who have just hatched 6/6. About 28 hours between first pip and first hatch - they took their time!

23 bobwhites hatched out of 31 eggs. 3 eggs had stopped developing when i went into lock down but i still left them in there hoping..... no luck :(. so that made about 28 good eggs that made it to lock down. 23 hatched and im seeing movement from 4 more eggs.... 1 of the eggs sadly died in the shell:( fully developed and all i can even see the feet when i candle:(.

Congrats on the quail! Post some pics. I've never seen quail chicks.
