Day 18.....Lockdown

I gave my 11 chicks the Marek's vaccine yesterday. Anyone else vaccinating their chicks?? I'm also considering the Newcastle and Fowl Pox vaccines.

You have me learning something didn't know you can give them marek vaccine. I did want to vaccinate for the fowl pox. The Mosquitos down here is pretty harsh for the birds. To just give an update on my hatch yesterday everyone made the night and getting stronger. Lyrika posted a link yesterday that I read. The situation I was having it suggested to raise the humidity to 70 -80 %. I had two hatch early this morning and they were fine.

Do you buy a new bottle of vaccine every time?? It said to dispose of it within one hour of opening. I had enough to vaccinate 1,000 chicks!

Yeah.... it's kind of a waste, since I usually hatch only 20ish at a time! I have seen how some people will cut up the wafer and save it, and split up the dilutant bottle. I took one look at that wafer and no way was I going to handle the live vaccine, let alone have a safe place to store it. Plus the vial relies on a vacuum to get it all in the syringe, I think I would screw that up by cutting up the wafer and dividing it. Maybe if I was a medical professional who knows something about it, but I'm just a novice so I mix the whole bottle.

I figure it's a little more than $1/chick? Pretty low price to pay if it saves their life from MD!!! I tossed the extra vaccine and the vials into the burn barrel afterwards.

So.....I'm having a go at feather sexing these young chicks. If my eye is right, I'm afraid that 4 of my 6 Black Copper Marans are roos. The third one is questionable at this point. My one and only chick that hatched from my flock ( a blue copper marans), I'm also afraid is a roo. If my hunch is correct, I have either 5 or 6 out of my 11 that are boys :( My local feed store just got chicks that are 2 days older than mine. I got 3 cute little Easter Egger pullets to raise with my chicks.........now I'll have to figure out what to do with all the roos. I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Anyone have any thoughts on feather sexing young chicks??
