Pip means when they crack a hole in the shell. Then zip is when they start cutting a line to get out.

I candled today actually. I saw a dark spot in each of the five eggs I looked at. It was still hard to see, but there was a definite dark spot attached to the yolk.

One egg in particular seemed to have a small chick "swimming" around. Am I nuts, or did I see that on day 9?

They're probably mixes. I only have hens, but I bought a dozen fertilized eggs from a neighbor who has roosters.

They have pure breed australorps, orpingtons, and RIR's. Sounds like a great mix for egg layers.
