DAY 19 & Pipping!!? Update ~ 5 Chicks Hatched out of 7!!! (-=

Just peeped in on my pippers. One is chirping away and has some shell broken. I can see movement behind the hole. I see a dab of red on the flap that is under the shell. Is this normal??? Should there be blood anywhere while pipping? I assume it is blood.

It is 1 am and I can't go to bed

It's probably normal, you are probably seeing those veiny things on the membrane, after a chick hatches if you look into the shell, the membrane has red vein like things running through it, I wouldn't worry about it unless you actually see blood dripping out or something.

It is 4 am and we have 1 chick hatched! I took him out, dried him with the blow dryer and ran out to the coop and stuck him under my broody.

I have 2 hatch dates. I was unaware, until yesterday, that you shouldn't do this. One batch is 4 days behind this one. Will they still make it if I pull the chicks out asap when they hatch out of the bator?

I have one chick hatched and one should be hatched out any time now.

The original 3 that pipped first haven't made much progress....Are they just slower (different breed than the ones that are hatching first)? Oh, I hope those 3 hatch because they are my BOs eggs.

Question on last post too that I really need answering...

You should probably have let the chick dry in the incubator and waited a day before moving him since they are weak and need to recover strength from the hatching work! Hope it makes it fine though. Good Luck!

I thought I should remove the chicks as soon as they hatch to avoid the moisture ruining the other hatch that is 4 days from now...??

I had one just came out of its shell now...so now we have 2 chicks...although my BOs still are pipping.

So leave this one in and do not open the bator?

I thought I should open the vent holes when they start hatching?

The first chick I removed, blow dried, and stuck under the hen is doing fine. Thank goodness. He seems really good.

Nice to hear the chicks doing fine! Even on a staggered hatch, you should really give the chick some time to dry on its own and gain strength. The humidity for a 24 hour period, until re-adjusted should be OK for the later hatch, but it is best to not do staggered hatches if only one incubator/hatching/brooder box is being used. Though it can certainly be done successfully, it is not an optimal choice.

I had no idea, until yesterday, not to do it or I probably wouldn't have put the second ones in. What I did is called a staggered hatch?

I will leave it alone then. Thanks for telling me or I was going to pull them out one by one, blow dry, and stick under the broody

I hope the rest make it!

I think there are 2 pipping, 1 is zipping, and 2 have already hatched and are doing great. They are Barred Rock chicks.....the ones that have hatched out.
