Day 20 and I hear cheeping

I have another little,one but please help me. Both these later ones seem to have huge problems standing and their feet seem too big for their body. I got such a fright last night I came home and the little one I'd put back in incubator was gone. The dog walker who lives on a farm must age popped it in the brooder box. He was there with the others, but he's tiny compared to them. He is shuffling about on his bum. This new one looks the same, just flopping about. I was super worried the wee one won't get to,the water today but just remembered he won't need it yet.

How long ago did this one hatch?

It can take a while for them to find their feet.

The first one on Saturday evening. He’s bright enough but we left him bum shuffling along. The new one arrived late last night. Most worried about the first one

So we have a spraddle legged chicken, who is now managing to get about the incubator with her splint on. The other one, it's legs were ok, its feet were ok but it was unable to get of its bum. It hasn't thrived at all and was in distress. It also had a big white spot on its head so we decided due to all this to let it sleep. I researched and found humane society method. We wrapped it up and it stopped yelling, and put it in the freezer. I cried but I know we did the rest but thing. We decided to disinfect and clean the incubator and we put wee blondie in a box under the brooder panel. The others tried to get in but she fought them all off and kept them out her box. The other wee one was constantly trod on She's back in with two eggs. A third one smelled but we float tested the other two and they did move. So we remain hopeful though after trauma with these later ones I'm not sure I do hope. The first three are getting their wing feathers. They all met my dog tonight. I don't understand the straddle legs as Conditions were the same, we had the textured matting. I read though too much room in incubator a possibility.

Awww, congrats. I just hatched out my first eggs. I was nervous and I can't even remember how many videos on YouTube I watched. As for a membrane being dry a damp paper towel is a really good way to help with that. I had 37 eggs in the incubator, they arecall about a week old now and so far everyone one is doing well. One was sprattle legged, but I used the bandaid brace method and it's walking fine now.

I’ve sorry you’ve had a tough day- I’ve learned in my short-so-far Chicken career that you learn what you can, do your best and if you have to make tough decisions be humane- it sounds as though you’ve done all of these things. So you carry on and enjoy the little ones as you are able! I love that they met your dogs .... each chick I’ve had gets introduced to the dogs too. You’ve done well- each time is a learning experience. Blessings sent your way.

Thank you so much. I know we did right thing as every fibre of my being knew there was something very wrong but this little one is very worth fighting for. Just want to do it right. Does this splint look right

So sorry it hasn't gone a smoothly as we all hoped it would for you. But you did good. I have not done the incubator way. Mine have just come from TS. Had one hen go broody on me the 1st of June, a friend gave me some fertilized eggs, second lady went broody, slip haft the pile under her. After about a week first one started spending time away from eggs, pushed those 4 under second hen. She kicked them to the curb. I didn’t have much hope for seeing any results. But here’s where I felt your excitement and anxiety. I could hear it in there. The shell started opening “We have a baby”. I couldn’t stop watching and checking. Worried the mother would squash it. In the end only 1 baby out of 8 eggs. It’s doing good, but have No idea what it is. I think I personally like babies that come without mother’s, much more friendly. I have an order coming in August for 6, that’ll be a first “mail order babies”. Thank you for this post.

Good to start them early with your dog. I have only had chickens for 1 1/2 yrs now. My dogs have all been right there for each batch that comes into house.

What I will do next time. Trust my incubator , it’s temperature and turning is spot on. I won’t add water as it stays around 40% humidity all the time. Absolutely NOT open the brooder for anything even to check at lock down! Keep the dividers in to stop chicks kicking eggs over. Lower humidity from 70-75 percent to 60-65% and practice how to reach that and maintain it. I made a choice based on information I thought made sense and have 3 healthy chicks but 2 later hatchers has malformed legs and that might have been a humidity issue. Yesterday morning I said never again, last night I ordered more eggs of the type that hatched despite my initial ineptitude and confusion. I will be setting my next batch next Tuesday.
