Day 4 On Coop Project: A Woman's Adventure

You go girl! Nice shed....will make a great coop! You did the right thing calling in the carpenter and look at what your hard work accomplished - all that wood separated, the sheds cleaned out and the great things you found!

I have ties to Old Fort - my Early relatives. And yes, it was the Little Red Hen who just did it all herself.

That was exactly what I was thinking about the windows . . .people who craft love this kind of stuff for high end crafting, and someone wanting to built a gazebo would use them for that . . .the ideas are endless. I want pictures and lots of them. LOVED this story by the way. You need to start a blog, it was so funny and informative at the same time. I am doing an Aframe, someone sent the plans to me free on here (love these people, they are just the best) and I have a plan. I have to HAVE a plan, and spring of 2011, watch out. Cause I am gettin' me a coop!!!

I applaud your tenacity at getting it built but I must step in and defend your hubby. We men are usually happy to build things for our wifes but it needs to be on OUR schedule. I would say......from the time you bring up getting chickens till I would actually start would be....maybe 6 months. I would first give you time to lose interest. Then if you kept bringing it up I would tell you the down side, ie., smelly, noisey, demanding of time and so on. If that did not deter you I would start a list of "Dream Tools" that I will need to complete this project. If you didn't balk at that I would go out and add some neat stuff to my garage then it would be GAME ON.

Didn't work with me. My hubby did NOT want chickens, wouldn't help, so I did all the building of our main coop myself. He did help haul the siding panels around to the back. I bounght me some new power tools and learned a lot about building. Now almost all the power tools are MINE!

Since those first chicks my husband has gone chicken crazy and I am currently working on the 5th coop!

You go girl! Even though my husband is the one who wanted chickens originally, he broke his wrist in the beginning phases of the project so guess who does most of the work? That would be me. I am the official power driller, tar paper layer, shingle layer, circular saw operator, miter saw operator, trench digger, post hole digger, etc. etc. Husband is glad he married a former tomboy...Hopefully your husband has some grudging admiration for your tenacity and ability to get things done. And I'm not sure I would be sharing those eggs with him, either....

Actually, everyone - it was Chicken Little who ran around yelling "the sky is falling, the sky is falling!" Henny Penny was part of the story as was Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosey, Turkey Lurkey, and Foxy Loxy.

Interesting note from Wikipedia: "The Chicken Little Award, a dubious achievement award given by the National Anxiety Center to people and organizations that they consider to be engaged in deliberately false, media-driven scare campaigns regarding environmental matters."

Just read this to MY DH ( who has NOT started my coop yet altho I have had my 6 chickens for quite a while now-- they are going on 5 months old) and he says, yep, I WROTE THAT..... gotta luv 'em.......

Hey folks! Wow! I loved reading all the responses! To answer a few questions....

1. I am in Old Fort in WNC, in between Marion and Black Mtn.

2. Yes, all that stuff did come out of that shed! I am here to tell you it was packed to the hilt! That's why it took me 3 days to clean it out!

3. As far as the windows and doors, I really didn't think they were worth all that much. Believe it or not, I tried to give them away on Freecycle....NO TAKERS. What do you want to bet that I try to sell them and they go? LOL! Gonna post pics here in a minute of the windows and doors. Let me know what y'all think. Oh, and the give away wood? Same story. Took two posts on Freecycle and one on Craigslist. Finally had one guy come get the load out of the truck. He was supposed to come back but didn't. I fiinally said the heck with it. If I can find somewhere to stack it and protect it, I am going to keep it and use my newly learned carpentry skills to build some small portable coops and dog houses. The carpenter is letting me help and teaching me a little as we go.

4. I actually did mention the idea of chickens last year but really didn't have the time to follow through. I just started up again in earnest a couple of months ago. I guess that counts as a re-start, so I should have waited a few more months? LOL

This is a really neat group. I am thankful to have so many new friends!

Now, today was Day 5. The main part of the coop is done. Since the shed was so long, we left an overhang so I can work and not get wet if its raining. All the materials except most of the wire and some hardware came off of the property. I love the idea of recycling so much of this stuff. The carpenter estimates another two days of work. He will be here tomorrow and then come back Monday (Just to mesh our schedules).

I promise pictures of the coop, but I am not going to post any of it until it's finished. Yes, I am taking them as we go, but I want the shock value of the before and after photos! LOL...The agreement is he is going to finish the coop and run. I am going to paint an decorate it. I have everything planned out and can't wait to get started! I may not be handy with a saw, but by-golly, I sure can use a paintbrush!

Ok, now for the pictures of the windows and doors. I really didn't think the windows were worth much. They are the slide type, without frames. The paint and caulking is chipped, but the wood and glass are in good shape. A couple of the doors are really nice....stripped and refinished or painted and they would look new. If the windows are marketable, where would be a place to start? Should I sell them as is, or try to refinish them? Any advice would be great!
