Day 4 On Coop Project: A Woman's Adventure

same here, I would think being asked those kinds of questions would point to a very concientious owner....sorry, it must be frustrating

I am a new chicken owner and have been following this thread. My limited 7 week advice to you would be to get some babies. I had never handled a chicken before and I got 5 babies when they were a week old. I have thought about how much easier it has become to handle them because I have been doing it since they were small. If someone told me to pick up a fairly large chicken before I had the experience with the little ones, I don't think I would have known how and probably would have scared the heck out of the chicken and myself. It is also really fun looking at them grow each day and get their feathers in. It's just amazing how fast they change. I look at the photos I took when I got them and I don't even remember them being that small. I love handling them and watching them. I talk to them all the time and they know my voice and I really think they know their names. I want to get a few more chicks but am waiting until this spring when I can spend the time like I did with these. I feel like they all trust me. If you get an older flock, you won't have any insight into their individual personalities.
After saying all this, maybe you don't care about this aspect of it and just want the eggs! At any rate, this is from one new chicken person to another. Hope it makes you feel better about not getting that flock. Asking questions seems to only tell me that these are good owners for anything that I care about, be it chickens, dogs, goats, cats.....etc. I'll watch to see how it all plays out and please post photos of what ever you get.

Shortly after posting all this, the lady gave me a call. She apologized and explained that she has been very busy. I get to pick up my flock tomorrow morning! Will post pics tomorrow! Thanks for all of the support!

Congrats on getting your new chicks! I love the coop and run! If I were you, I'd save the windows for a greenhouse, they look perfect for 1. Not sure of your climate in the winter months but fresh veggies would be a great treat for your new flock in the colder months.

I'm also a rural carrier, someday hope to retire to NC, it's too hot down here.

Got the flock today! They are settling in nicely, and the rooster, Rocky, is so handsome! They were very obliging as we worked around them fixing little things that we decided we wanted to change. Hubby changed the run door for the chickens. Now it is a sliding door and more varmint proof. it was funny, 'cause he grumbled at me, "I told you I wasn't going to help with this #!@% thing, and here I am working on it!" I have been especially sweet to him today, fixing his lunch and fetching tools and water. (Yes, I was playing carpenter too!)

In any case, all is well. Below are some more pictures. The first is the door that hubby and I built a few days ago. Previously there was an old barn door there that had a bad gap at the bottom. We took it off and built Dutch doors with the top half being wire. The other pictures are our new flock. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Very nice dutch doors and absolutly gorgeous birds! I would change the wood latch to something a coon cant open (they are very clever!) at least on the bottom door! I have screen door hooks on my run door, but they have the spring lock on them. It is hard for me to get them open sometimes, so I am not worried about a coon getting them open. You could choose from a variety of closures with the type doors you have. Good luck with your new flock, that rooster is especially pretty!

Congrats! I've been following silently since day 1. I guess you won't have to wait for eggs! Your coop and flock look great - and I'm glad your DH pitched in at the end. He'll be attached to them before you know it.
