I candled last night as I needed to add water and here are the results so far:

BBS Orpingtons: 8/16
Black Rosecombs: 6/6
Silkies: 6/7
California White Crosses: 7/8
Dark Brahma Bantams: 4/5

I might have a better ratio on the BBS's. I did not use the brightest light.

I am just so excited I had to share. I have let momma raise chicks all my life but this is the first time I have used an incubator.

When I was a kid, one of my jobs was to spinkle and turn hundred's of eggs at a time in my great grandparents dirt floor basement but that was just work. This is pleasure!

Edited due to the fact that I cannot count to 42!

It is hard to get a good view of brown eggs anyway. I would wait and redo the Orpingtons on day 10. They should be bigger and you'll be able to get a better view. I am always very excited to candle. My kids and hubby could care less.

I know. I have become chicken obsessed thanks in part to my BYC enablers. Anything new that happens makes me so happy.

Maybe I need a life???????? Naaah. I already have a great one.

Day 12:

BBS Orpington: 9/16
Black Rosecombs: 6/6
Dark Brahma Bantams: 4/5
BBS Silkies: 6/7
California White x Buff Orp Cross: 7/8

So basically I am happy. I opened all 10 of the culls last night. 9 had no development (infertile or scrambled cells maybe) and one had a blood ring.

This is so different than when I let the mommas do it. I just leave them alone unless I smell something foul. LOL. Now I cannot keep my head away from the plexiglass. Oh the things I find enjoyment in...
