Day of Silence!

Having graduated from college about ten years before the first DOS, it wasn't something I was familiar with. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I have mixed feelings....why can't people just quit with the name-calling, slurs, bullying and harrassing EVERY day instead of just one day of the year? I just don't get the big deal of somebody being gay or lesbian. They are people too and deserve to love and be loved, just as every person on this planet does. Why on earth does it matter who somebody else sleeps with and shares their lives with?

Again, I just don't get it. Be nice every day !!

I'll admit, I hadn't heard of it before, but I think it's wonderful!

It looks like what you are suggesting, is what they are aiming for. While many folks know that bullying is wrong, there are soooo many others that just don't get it. Anything that can help to bring awareness to the damage that bullying can do is a good thing!

Never have and never will.

Edit: I better explain myself before I start getting hate mail...

I do not believe any one demographic should be singled out. Why bring attention to those that choose that lifestyle? Why bring attention to those who do not? Just live and let live.

I think it is because the bullying that takes place because of sexual orientation is -
A. Especially rampant in today's schools
and
B. Affects both gay and straight students.

The reason this day started was because of the suicide of a student who had been a target of bullying because he was "perceived" as gay. He himself did not identify as gay. Whether a victim of bullying is gay or not, is not the point. The point is that picking on someone because of perceptions of gayness has, until now, largely been ignored.

we have nothing like that over here in Australia..... doesn't really suprise me though. We tend to be a bit slow on the uptake when it comes to these sorts of things.

This demographic is already singled out for abuse, teasing and harassment. The idea is to end the bullying, and I would love to see all bullying gone, but this demographic has long been targeted.
