Day old chicks will be here tomorrow! Couple questions....

I dip their beak in warm yoke water, (They lived on their yoke in the egg it is fine) just to give them strength. Be prepared to find a few that didn't make the journey, and concentrate on the ones that made it.

MPC chick packages have a USPS tracking number that should be in your confirmation e-mail. Many (most?) post offices will NOT send live animals out for delivery - call ahead. Not only does my post office not send them out, but they also keep live animals at a different branch than what I was expecting.

Have your brooder warm, have their food/water/bedding ready, hopefully have something on hand to help them recover from shipping (my first batch was very healthy and didn't need it. My second batch is in transit.)

First time USPS was reasonably timely with tracking. This time, with packages shipping later than last time (2:30 PM instead of 10 AM), the tracking isn't going so well.

I got my chicks 2 weeks ago from MPC. All of mine came healthy and happy on a Wednesday morning around 11:30am. I popped in a week before to talk to them directly. My post office was very friendly and said they are used to working with chicks and will call as soon as they arrive. Which they did.

I immediately dipped their beaks in water and made sure they drank some. My water solution also had Sav-a-chick electrolytes in it. I also put them under their heat source right after so they knew where water and warmth was. I kept a close eye the first week. If you have a less active chick, make sure to give it attention!!! I lost one on day 2. I think she got dehydrated and it only took 12 hours for her to go. I recommend having Nutridrench and Enfamil Poly-vi-sol on hand. That way when one chick looks a little less perky, you’re not driving to 5 different stores to find the right Polyvisol with NO iron. Yeah. I did that. Lol. Target and Walmart. Check online first to see if they have it in store. Also, MPC was amazing. I called them and they truly care about their customers and product. They did all they could to help me with my baby chick.

You’ll be cleaning some fluff butts too. First week is the heaviest. Kind of like when babies have meconium. Lol just gotta make sure their vents are clean. Vasalene their bottoms after you’ve cleaned them.

Also, they already had a great internal clock. Went to bed under the heater and quiet the first night. I thought they all died! I had to go check them. Lol. I used a blanket and half covered them to help keep the warmth in and dark. They are now trained by light and dark to sleep or wake.

Have fun! Sorry for the long post. I love my babies and am learning too since it’s my first time as well. I just am 2 weeks ahead of you!

No call from the post office for us this morning :( I feel so bad for the babies, knowing that they went from their safe shell, directly into a shipping box and they are STILL there - for another 20 hours! Our post office said they only come in the wee hours, so that means no babies today. That's good for US - giving us more time to make sure the brooder is set up correctly. BUT, very sad & scary for the babies :( I guess we will be going back to TSC for some Nutri-Drench & Wal-Mart for some Poly-Visol - I want to make sure they have every possible chance of thriving!

Someone said to prepare to lose some of them - I SURE hope not - we only ordered three.

EDIT / UPDATE - At least the tracking number is finally registered with USPS. It looks like our triplets spent the night there in OH. I will have everything set up and on hand by then. I made one of the heating pad tunnels, that I found here, in case they did make their flight yesterday, But, their Premier Heat Plate is on the truck for delivery today, so we will be much better prepared for their arrival in the morning. I hope yours arrived safely @45pro ?
