yes, as gross as it sounds, the freezer until trash day is the best option. I know because I tripled bagged a opossum I had shot for the same reason and put it in the garbage with three days to go until pick-up day and WHEW-WEE, YUCK, it was really stinking bad by the time the trash was picked up. The odor lingered for a week after pick-up day.

Bag carcass, put in leak-proof plastic container, drive to nearest gas station, deposit bag in trash there. Bring container home and wash it.

If you don't have a freezer big enough, or don't want raccoon cooties in your house (I wouldn't) I would do the side of the road thing. One road kill looks like another and I don't think the medical examiner is gonna do an autopy.
