Deadliest Catch Fans?

Yes, I am obsessed. Completely and totally. That show rules!

I read their book, too. Maybe if you guys are feeling like you need another dose, you can go out and find the book, too. It's about Andy and Johnathan, a sort of autobiography. You wouldn't believe some of the crazy, insane stuff they did when they were kids.

I'm sorry! That wasn't my intent.

The fisherman's memorial will bring the toughest to tears though. I can barely stand to listen to it, I cry my heart out for all the people lost every year.

Last year was a bad one here. First we had that small plane full of Russian Old Believers go down in the ocean, right off the runway, and only one or two people made it out. Then we had a really bad storm in early February. On the way into town to get some stuff for my DD's b-day party we noticed a ton of cars parked at Mill Bay Beach. That's not a big suprise, as people always stop to watch when we get huge waves. However, on our way back home the parking lot was even more packed and I saw a Tropper car pull over with it's lights on. I told Tessa, "oh no, someone must be in the water". Right as we were passing the parking lot a Coast Guard helicopter came swooping into the bay and my heart seized - I knew it was bad. I pulled into the second parking lot and got out and asked someone what was going on. They pointed across the bay (maybe 200 yards) to the rocks below some houses. There was a boat, about a 30 footer, upside down on the rocks. I asked them if there was anyone inside and they said no one knew yet. Right at that moment their radios squawked - they must have been CG or law enforcement - and it said there were 2 guys known to be inside and the people trying to get them out could hear at least one person banging on the bottom of the boat. It was awful. Residents of the homes where the boat was beached were trying to crawl over the rocks to get to the boat. They ended up taking chainsaws to the fiberglass bottom of the boat, with the help of a rescue swimmer the CG dropped. They got one guy out alive, but the owner of the boat didn't make it. It was so terrible to see, knowing there wasn't anything we could do to help. I cried all the way home.

Now you're trying to make me cry harder!!

j/k, but it is sad... we've experienced firsthand how unpredictable the weather and water can be here. You have to be prepared for ANYTHING.

Kodiakchicken, you made me cry. I admire the people who fish out of Dutch. The Bering Sea is one dangerous stretch of water. I grew up in Southeast, and have known far too many people who died in fishing and flying accidents. And Southeast's inland waters aren't nearly as dangerous as the areas out there. In my home town, a family of nine all drowned when I was a kid. In a small town, with that many children gone, it is a blow for the entire community. So I find it a little hard to watch.

Sorry I made you cry! I know these things are emotional. As you know, being from Southeast, these kind of deaths in Alaska are not just a statistic, they are people we know, love and work side by side with. It's a tough life in this part of the country, but that's what binds us all together.

We are big deadliest catch fans as well. I really wanted to go to the food show in Soldotna a couple summers ago because several of the Captains were going to be there speaking. My folks talked me out of it though since it was supposedly a trade show and not really open to the public. I went to a quilt show instead... not really what I was looking for, lol.
