I am wondering about housing them with OEG's. TEENY chickens. I think.

It's not a matter of the size of the chickens necessarily. It's a matter of disease exposure.

The diseases that are of concern are respiratory, if I remember correctly. Don't quote me on that part -- I may be wrong. The folks over on the quail board can help you more. JJ is one of the experts there. If someone else's advice contradicts his, take JJ's word of experience.

JJ is my FB friend too. I will make sure to research plenty before getting any. My OEG's are seperate from the rest of the chickens, and I am SURE Ken would be thrilled to make ANOTHER extension to the coop.

Quail are easy to raise.

Far easier than chickens. Except for button quail, that is. They are lunatics. I still love 'em!

Ok I have needy chickens, stupid chickens, flightly chickens, teeny chickens, varied ducks, a brooder with 13 2 week olds and a bator with 17 duck eggs in there. Why not add some lunatic birds???

HA HA. Or, like me, you could just keep them in the house or garage.

Coturnix quail are easier. They aren't even lunatics. The button quail tend to "popcorn" straight upwards. They can actually break their own neck hitting the top of a cage. Had it happen once...

Yeah I had read that. I think until I can come up with a padded pen, I'm gonna pass on those. That or a lot more space to raise them.

Come on Debi...............ya know you want them....hehe

Now I'm enabling!

now I want quail. So I'm trying to convince my friend/housemate/landlord that HE wants them

I nearly convinced him with the "lunatic" part

so... what do you need to keep indoor quail?

Well, button quail are little tiny birds. You need proper housing for them, most importantly. If you come on over to the quail forums, there are lots of posts about that.

If you are talking coturnix or other quail inside the house, you'd need:

Proper housing, feed, water, etc.
OCD to stay on top of cage cleaning OR a clothespin to put on your nose. They can be pretty smelly.

I clean their area every single day, sometimes twice...
