December Hatch-A-Long 2014

Looked into the Hatcher a little while ago-----lots of eyes looking back at me. Today is day 21, so I will take them out in the morning.

Awesome! So do you open and remove chicks at the beginning of day 22 or the end or just at some point on day 22?

Update, all 4 of my eggs have hatched. This is my first ever 100% hatch rate
on 13 days of non-turned eggs. I'm thanking my lucky stars~pretty amazing.
Wow that's awesome. This morning when I went to turn my eggs I opened up the incubator and right away an O was staring at me in a sea of X's! At first my heart sank and I thought, crap I forgot to turn that guy and then I remembered you and your non turned eggs for 13 days and I was like oh well 1 night can't be that horrible! Congrats.

Glad you are trying again! What's in the incubator this time?

me too, I'm excited! I went crazy this time and I have 28 eggs in there... I only had 12 last time. I have quite a bit of different ones and some I'm not even sure about. I have 4 buckeye (they are big eggs), 1 polish, 3 that are either silkie or polish, 1 California white, 2 Sicilian buttercups, 2 ameraucana, 4 leghorns, and the others could be delawares, barred rock, rir. I got 23 eggs from 1 person who was only supposed to give me 18 but he's not sure if all are fertile so threw in extras and then I got 5 from another person. I'm on day ummm 2 or 3 I can't remember. Time frames a little confusing this time because I set at 1120pm whereas last time I set at 8am. I'm weighing the eggs periodically this time and hopefully I'll be able to adjust my humidity as needed and get a better hatch this time.

On a good note, hubby got a bunch of tools for christmas and I'm working on getting him to fix up the chicken area... we will need more coop space if all 28 hatch. And this time I'm shooting for all 28 instead of "hoping 1 hatches" because apparently you get what you hope for!

I'm in the same boat with needing more space. We have 13 left from our November hatch and seven more with a broody from the December hatch. We also have an injured chicken that had to be separated into a "private room". I wanted to hatch more in February, but the only way I could do it is if I promise DH I'll sell them all by the time they are a week old. We really are out of room. I love chicks though!!!

Woot woot ! You go girl! You have some pretty cool types of chickens picked out! Can't wait to see fuzzy butt pics! Hubby with a honey do list is even better!
How are your two lil guys and your Christmas vacation? Did the kids like the pj monsters?

I am completely hooked on this chick thing too. I can't wait to have a broody!

I had an injured chicken in a dog crate in my boyfriends gym for about 3 weeks....her big toe was broken and through the skin...so, def sucked for her! Good luck with your little injured one!

Are you in a good area that you can have your little chicks outside???

Had about 50 hatch, all but one hatched but it pipped and died and had one that was healthy in size etc but, born with no lower leg on one side, but had a very small chicken foot on that leg at the knee. Probably have to put it down because the other chicks are walking all over it and it can not get around. Pretty good hatch other than that. I got alot more that has to go into lock-down in a couple days.

These eggs/chicks were in the cabinet hatcher and I can not see good enough to see if All are hatched so I just open it sometime during day 22 and remove them. Its not a rush to get them out---just when I have time. If I am using the styrofoam and see all have hatched I open it when they look dry BUT only very few times when they are all hatched in it.

For sure----do not worry about missing a time turning the eggs. I am sure the hens miss one every once in a while.

I went the entire 18 days without turning and still had some hatch----forgot to plug the turner in---went to take it out on day 18 and found I had never plugged it in.
