December hatch-along

Okay yall I have been so worried about these hatch after a 0% hatch last month. I candled all of the at 5 days today and out of 60 i have 41 with veins. 14 with no development and 5 that i can not see in. So It is looking to be a good hatch so far out of the 14 undeveloped 8 of them where bantam eggs the others are black stars. he sold me 10 bantam and i am not sure the others are going to develop no veins but there is a small spot in them that looks like it is starting so if i just figure all the bantam where infertile since it is almost all of them that is not growing then it is only 6 of the black star that are not developing and 5 unsure. I think for a second hatch for someone new to chicks this is looking really nice. They told me the bantam eggs would be a hit and miss kind of thing so i have a 68% of eggs that are surely growing.
That sounds very promising! Your December hatch is looking good.

I just candled my twelve shipped Cochin eggs at 5 days, and I couldn't see any veining. Are we expected to see something this early? (On the bright side, a couple of the loose air cells are stabilizing.)

I was just using my cell phone flashlight function. Is that enough to see by? What are you using to candle, might I ask? Does it take a trained eye to see veining at 5 days?

Thanks for any input. I wish I could have some good news about this batch of eggs.

I'm using my cellphone, it's so much concentrated brighter than any flashlight in the house. Although the flashlights with the lens removed are a perfect shape to block light out.

Using my cellphone I could see veins and central "dot" clearly on day 4,5,6 (today is day 7) for blue orpington eggs.

Thanks! I think you have skills and good eyes.

I couldn't see the dot or veins at 5 day, nor could I see anything with my Silkie eggs at that time... but I did hatch seven Silkies! I think I'll wait until day 10 and try again.

Best of luck with your Orpingtons! They are such sweet birds.

Wow, I don't know what happened in the hen house today... we went out to do nightly chores, and to clean the hen house, and I walked in to eggs scattered about, and several nest boxes dug up, and a couple emptied. One of the eggs was from our newest broody's nest. I was going to just put it back in and see what happened, but it jostled in my hand and felt wierd so I candled it, and the air cell now has a funky shape and is detached. It was not like that when I put it in there. Oh well. So, she is now on 13.
