December hatch-along

How long does it take for silkie eggs to start showing veins day 7 and out of 10 only 1 has showed anything and it was just a small red line i have not seen again.

Mine was showing very obvious veining on day 5 and great movement by day 7. Of my 3 silkie eggs, only 1 developed. I think with all their fluff on their butts, it's tough to get good fertility.

Please don't worry! I kept a detailed spreadsheet on my shipped Silkie eggs.

On Day 7, all I could tell was which eggs were clear. Seven of the ten eggs had some kind of dark mass, but I couldn't see veining; one was moving. By Day 15, they were all moving and all seven hatched, even the ones with saddle-shaped air cells.

So, I never was able to see distinct veining, but I got a great hatch. I think it depends on the thickness/color of egg, the timing of candling, the power of the light you are using, the amount of light spill over you can block, the darkness of the room, your skill at knowing what to see, and your eyesight!

I don't think my eyesight is all that sharp.

Hang in there. By Day 14 or 15, you should have a pretty good idea of viable eggs.

I start with them in the house for the first 2 weeks or so, then i move them outside. Right now, I have a brooder set up in the screen porch made of two large dog cages connected together. I use cardboard on the sides to keep the bedding in. The chicks out there now range from 3-6 weeks old. It's been in the 20's the last few days with no issues. I keep 1 heat lamp hanging in the one cage and one of those green, wool, army blankets covering the top of that cage to keep the heat in.

Added turkey eggs, isbar eggs, and marans to my incubator. It's too full now. I'll have to turn 4 by hand on the side until I pull my eggs out for lockdown on the 14th. Hopefully my second incubator arrives in time

Hopefully the turkey eggs do something this time. Is there a trick to them?
