December hatch-along

I couldn't stand it anymore. It's day 8 for Rick and Daryl in the incubator. I got out my stethoscope and listened. I'm pretty sure I heard heartbeats in both eggs! It's hard to tell for sure since I'm used to listening to humans...lol. it sorted sounded like a humming noise that I could not attribute to anything surrounding us. I read that the heart and blood vessels begin to form between days 5-8 in emu eggs.
I also tried to candle them for sh*ts and giggles but I saw nothing as expected. The shells are too thick and too dark.

Of my 5 chicken eggs, I have 2 olive eggs that I can't see into and it's so hard to just wait and see. I can only imagine how I would feel with emu eggs. How long until they hatch?

56 days normally but I'm incubating at a slightly lower temperature hoping for a 60 day hatch. 52 days to go.

I weighed my emu eggs today and even raising the humidity level a little I'm still underweight. Rick is 4g under and Daryl is 7g underweight. I filled both sides and the middle reservoir with water to really increase the humidity.... I'm around 60% now. I Will weigh them again in a few days to see where we're at.

Candled the 78 eggs last night on day 14th and 72 remained 2 blood rings and 4 stopped developing. Due on the 17th.

1st candle of 39 eggs set last Saturday (7th day) and 35 remained. 1 bloodring and 3 unfertiled. Due on the 24th.

Set another 41 eggs last night to be due on the 31st.

A chick is moving!

I just had to candle one of my Cochin/Frizzle eggs again, since I didn't see any distinct veining on Day 5, on any of the eggs. Today is Day 8, and the one egg I peeked at (Jolly) has a chick-in-progress wiggling all around. Yay!

They all have funky air cells, but I've worked with that before.

Of the 11 that made it to lockdown I have 8 chicks, 2 that I suspect are late quitters (no movement/peeping inside the shell and I have one that has been pipped for about 8 hours with no apparent progress. Do I just let it be & hope it can finish hatching on it's own?

Candled the shipped eggs today. We have 31 in the incubator now. There were about a dozen with wonky air cells that I gave a chance to anyhow. All but one of them were tossed today. I'm hoping to have 20 hatch considering they are all shipped from multiple states away and we were recently away for four days with an egg sitter. Hope to hold off on candling again until next Sunday! So excited for the Christmas babies!!
