December hatch-along

5/5 on my first hatch in my homemade incubator! I used eggs from my own chickens. The black one and orange one are RIR and Olive Egger (Marans/Amerucana X), the 2 chipmunks are RIR and Cream Legbar crosses and the one with the white dot is a RIR and Dominique cross. This was a really fun experience. It's tempting to toss a few more eggs in the incubator and start a new batch. My husband, who was never very excited about the idea of more chickens, was so in awe when he watched 2 hatch out, that he even gave me his blessing to hatch more. lol. And the kids LOVED it. These are my first barnyard mixes and I look forward to seeing how they feather out. I am hoping for some crested heads and fluffy cheeks. The orange one has feathered legs.

I have zero electrical experience. I watched a Youtube video from Homesteading in SC. I followed instructions pretty closely, but only added 1 light bulb since my cooler was small. It cost about $35 to build, but could be much cheaper depending on what you have on hand. The foam cooler was under $3. If you had a bigger cooler, you could add more lights for heat and a whole lot more eggs.

I went through my pictures (I have thousands because I document everything) and was surprised that I had no pictures of my newest incubator! So, I got a good picture of her today. :-D

I just candled my shipped Cochin/Frizzle eggs (Day 12). They all arrived with loose air cells.
One chick is moving, which is great!

Four show no development.

One has a non-moving embryo and possibly a blood ring forming.

Five, I just can't read.

One looks like it has good development, but no movement.

So, of twelve eggs, I am anticipating hatch of 1-7.
Shipped eggs, long distances and winter weather make for a touch hatch.

Day 20 on my 71 eggs on my sportsman and a lot of peeping going on. Sucks not having a window on it to see what's going on inside.
