December hatch-along

Ended up assisting the last chick, it was malpositioned and couldn't turn to zip. But seems pretty good this morning
I'll give it a little more time before I put it in the brooder with the others.

I ended up with 9 chicks out of the 11eggs that made it to lock down. Pretty pleased with my homemade incubator.

They are really cute. I have mine in a homemade incubator and their on lock down now. I'm hoping for 5/5.

I am wanting to get my flock back up to what i had about 5 years ago which was about 120 hens and 2 roosters. I share the eggs with my dad and grandma so it is them and my 2 soon to be 3 kids husband and myself. I also what to try my had at quail and i think some Muscovy ducks i hear they are the best meat duck. And i trade alot of things to get stuff i need around the farm most people will trade anything for chickens in the right number.

This momma is a lot meaner than our others, holy cow! But, we did what HAD to be done... that I have put off because she is SO vicious... we checked under her for any additions. There were three, and one of the others had broken. So, out of 14 eggs, one was pushed out, one was broken, and 12 remain. I candled the three, and there is development in all three, with 2 being farther along. I was going to mark the two and give them back to her, but since I don't know for sure how far behind they are, we decided not to. So she will just have the remaining 12. I do wish I had an incubator, or the parts to construct one, so I could give these three a chance as well, then sneak them under her when they hatch.

Okay, I simply could not do it! Lol So, I marked the three differently and put them back under her. Instead, I will pull them out when it is time and hatch them inside, then sneak the chicks under her in the night.
