I've only read the first eleven pages of this thread, so maybe you mentioned this earlier and I did not see it, but who is the doctor in AZ that does this procedure? I am close enough to drive there, most likely. (I hope you don't mind me asking.)

Dr. James, are you still doing this? I'm in Choctaw and while my neighbors claim they're okay with the noise, I wonder, as their house is much closer to the coop than mine. I'd drive out east (where? Henrietta?) to get a few of the Roos taken care of!

Yep. Been doing a bunch of my young roosters lately. I'm at Spiro, southeast of Sallisaw. It's still a ways past Henrietta.

I live in north Texas by ok border. How far are you? Might have missed it but the procedure is $150. At what age can you decrow? And I am looking for a Rhode Island Red roo. Are they $150 as well? Like others I live in a small town just on the edge 1/4 mile into city limits. I am the first home in the limits :( my neighbors have signed a letter to me for my chickens so I am legally allowed to have them with a variance. But would love my kids to have the same experience of hatching chicks as I did as a child. ( same home but city limits have moved back since I was a kid). I have 10 ladies with 7 more soon to laying age at which time my older ladies will be to old to lay much. So all I need is 1roo. Thanks! And just FYI I haven't found a vet in this farming area that does poultry either

I did not read this entire thread, just got too disgusted to.

With such little respect for human beings [millions are declared inferior or even subhuman], I should not be surprised by cruelty imposed on animals.
Don`t get for the life of me why some folks here delight in kicking and hitting roosters simply for being who roosters are. Or why anyone would surgically [or chemically] alter them or any other animal. Or any human being.
Can`t shake off the creepy impression that some human folks just thrive on abusing other creatures as much as they gloat over abusing others of their own kind.

Okay, okay, rant over...........
Couldn`t resist because this "decrowing business" is too bizarre. My opinion anyway.

As a bird rehabber I am used to all kinds of loud birds and I`ve always enjoyed them all.
I am new to chickens and I only have one, a small rooster, who showed up on my doorstep during a cold, snowy day.
I picked him up and kept him, so the neighbors` dogs wouldn`t kill him. The chicken keeping folks I located didn`t want him even after I quarantained him for eight weeks.
He is very tame and sweet and apparently happy with me.

And he crows!!!

He crows at sunrise which is when I get up anyway. Right nows that`s at 4:30am.
He also crows anytime during the day.
That`s besides a whole repertoire of amazing vocalizations I had no idea could come out of a chicken.

I love his crows and encourage him to crow more. And he does.

I`ve had second thoughts after joining this chicken forum, did it on an impulse which probably wasn`t smart.
Will probably continue to do much more lurking than posting. Can`t say that I actually connect with others here.
Now I`ll go off to find posts from people who care for their chickens.
Fortunately, they, besides those who kick and hit and seemingly hate their chickens, roam around here also.

Therefore....."When you find what`s worth keeping, with a breath of kindness blow the rest away" [from "The Golden Feather" by Robbie Robertson]

I also agree, if people can't admire a rooster for what he is and does, maybe those people shouldn't have chickens after all.

I admire roosters and would love to have one, but I am not allowed. If, for some reason, I ended up with one, I would either get rid of it or get rid of the crow. The shelter here is overrun with roosters. Giving it away to some random person on Craigslist is scary to me because of cockfighting or to be used as meat (I would be too attached for that). The only other option for it to lead a safe life as possible is to keep it without it crowing. I don't like it, but I think that might be the only way to go.

If I should hatch my own eggs in the future, I would have homes ready for the males before taking on that endeavor. Until then, sex-linked hens only.

to save a pet, i think it's ok (personally i wouldn't do it) very similar to dogs that can't bark
where i live, the laws apply to roosters just like dogs for noise complaints...it has to be constant for more then 10 minutes
they are allowed to crow from 6am to 10pm
i had a complaint against me once but only because the neighbor worked the graveyard shift so he couldn't sleep but really there was nothing he could do since it was after 6am

You can't give a rooster a watch and expect him to listen. I personally have made the decision to move to a rooster friendly town so I can enjoy their song.
