Deep Litter Method Question

Have you ever added your coop litter to the run after it has been used?
Yep. I maintain deep litter in both the coop and the run. I open the coop and run doors for them daily, regardless of weather. They choose whether to go out or stay in, and they usually choose out simply because they love the freedom of ranging. And I don't ever change it all out to the ground....I always leave a layer as "starter", sort of like sourdough. I don't turn my litter over completely, either....I just give it a flip to get the poopy layer underneath the cleaner. Every few days I pull off the top layer under the roosts, where it gets really dirty, toss it into the cleaner area and give it a flip, then either move cleaner litter under the roosts or put in new bag of dried leaves that I save from raking the yard - or pinching from the neighbors, with their permission, of course. It all takes longer to type than it does to do! :lau

I deep bed my coop with shavings....a couple of times a year about 1/3 - 1/2 is shoveled out into the run and gets mixed into my deep litter.

Same here. Yesterday I took 4 wheelbarrow loads from the coop and dumped them in the run. No need to spread it out, just throw a few handfuls of scratch or BOSS on the piles and the girls take care of spreading it for me. Tomorrow I’m going to add some grass from the lawn (mowed yesterday) and maybe some leaves, but there aren’t many of those yet so not really worth raking.

Yep....best part of dlm is the birds doing the work for you. Yesterday we shucked, blanched, stripped and bagged 220 ears of corn. We split the by-products (husks and stripped cobs) between my sisters run (we were at her place) and mine...got home late lady night so I put the stuff out this morning:

Two hours later they had things in order

Don't think I could have spread it more evenly had I done it myself, lol
