deer hunting

I took these outside for a pic instead of doing one by one...boy were they dusty! I had to broom them off.

Those are beautiful! What is on the neck of the one to the far right?

Thanks ~ Oh, those are some carved wooden animal beads. I couldn't figure out what to do with them one day and stuck them around his neck and that is where they have been ever since.

I even put my DHs camo hats on their heads. LOL

That deer on the right was my DHs first nice buck. That was about 8 or 9 yrs. ago. I worked back then and I was up at 5 getting ready and it was the last day of season and my DH was going to sleep through it. I made him some buscuits and 'mater gravy and told him to get his behind out in the woods. He walked out the door and less than 5 minutes I heard a shot and I was thinking 'no way, someone else is out there hunting - boy is he gonna let them have it!' So I go on outside to investigate because I don't think he has had time to find and kill yet but here he comes running and it was him. He said as soon as he climbed the bank into the woods there he was looking straight at him and he got him. He was so tickled but I have to remind him that if not for me fixing his breakfast and making him get up he wouldn't have got that one

So, I claim that deer

The one in the middle is the one he got this past season.

Nice bucks Chicks_N_Horses ~ You are soon going to need one of these ... my uncle is a big hunter, all over the US and Africa. These are few in his trophy room. They had to add onto the house because they were running out of space. All the deer meat they eat or give to food banks. Not sure about the rest. My aunt shot the zebra in Africa and is still seeing a doctor for ringing in the ears ~ they think it was from the high powered rifle she used.

It will never cease to amaze me the difference in size standards from Mule deer to Whitetails... I think the deer that DH wants to mount are pathetically small, even the record book buck on our wall now isnt as big as several of the mulies on my dad's walls and they are just "good sized" for Mulies....

This guy is on the smallish side, I mean, I'd shoot him but he werent no monster...DH said it was the biggest deer he'd ever seen. Poor ppl who only see those sad little whitetails...

This guy we saw downtown in Craig Colorado. He was too worried about matrimony with the doe to care that we were 20 feet away taking pics in the car...he's small but its a good pic

I lost the pics of my dad's trophy room...I had a great shot of his Mulies and Caribou...

I told my DH to mount his turkeys but we have never done it. We take the tail fan and mount it on the wall on a picture type display. I love the whole body mounts and the rest of those - WOW is all I can say!!!!

I gotta show my DH this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the zebra rug! I have never seen one so pretty! I LOVE THAT ROOM!!!!

I killed a 10pt buck three years ago, and I considered having it mounted, but it was just too expensive..

Instead, I took a bowsaw and cut a wedge out of his skull to remove the antlers.. Then I went to a local sawmill and got a slab of spalted hard maple, and on to wal-mart to get a ball of styrofoam and about a half-yard of beige felt.

I let the antlers and the slab dry out good, then ran the slab through the planer and polyurethaned it.. I cut the styrofoam ball in half and removed a wedge from one half that was the same size as the wedge of skull.. A little glue here, a few screws there, and I had the styrofoam and antlers mounted to the slab. I sprayed the back of the felt with glue, then worked and stretched it around the styrofoam and antlers, then tucked it in neatly between the wood and the foam..

Voila..

A really nice looking mount, if I do say so myself...a mount that I've been told just couldn't have been a DIY job...and I think it cost me about $6, total.

LOL Sparkles @ the little white tails.

When my DH shot that biggest one this year he came running in the house saying "It's a MULE babe, I shot a mule" LOL And that fast he ran right back out of the house. He was so excited. I love it when he gets a nice buck because that is like icing on the cake for him.

GaNewChick ~ I doubt we ever get a room that filled up but we are making progress

Every year or two years he gets a nice buck to hang up. We still have one at the taxidermist now. It should be ready soon.

That is a very beautifully decorated room. My DH liked it, I drug him in here to look. He said they were really nice mounts. He loved all those bucks.

CNJUSTO ~ Yep, my DH got two bucks this year and only wanted to mount one because of the expense... $325 per head .... and he wanted to do it like you said you did. My FIL does most of his like that to keep from the expense....I took the deer to the taxidermist anyways...LOL...I like to see it looking down at me like it is still alive.
