Defining Sizzles

Pencilling is virtually impossible to see on a partridge that is light color based and silkied or frilkied. But a male partridge has a completely different color pallate even if he is a blue partridge. I bet Sonoran has pics somewhere...

And total hijack and off topic SOMEBODY look at my new pet silkied serama pictures -wwaaaaaaaaaa and I'm adding one here because I'm lonely and I want someone to look at my Saul.

At the moment my camera is MIA or I would post some new photos--I think I loaded it to DH and it is in his hiking/climbing gear. I have not had a problem identifying penciling on silkies, although the quality of the penciling cannot easiily be determined. But you can definitely see striations in the colour on the feathers.

Okay, here are some old photos I had. Starting with a mix of partridge, blue partridge and various others.

Note the colour difference between the different blue partridge pullets.

And a grey:

Despite the obvious penciling, this guy is all roo. He is the father of several of the above blue partridges. Henny feathered to have the penciling?

Here are a partridge cock and a blue partridge cock. The blue is the one in the back. In real life it is easy to tell that he is blue. Not so easy in this photo.

WWD - Saul is darling! I had a lil serama roo that I sold this spring. They are so tiny, but big on personality.
He was best buds with my black copper maran roo.

Ok back on topic: Would the smooth sizzle chick I pictured be considered a blue partridge?

I was just checking over my frizzled cochins because my roo has a skin issue and they sleep with him.

Anywho-
I had forgot that my little Sylver has really good silkie feet. But they are unfortunately white. Still.... It puts her at the top of my list of who to mate with my showgirl to get sizzles.

WOW, I go away for a couple of days & you all just go crazy!!! I can't tell you how happy I am to see so many excited letters! WooHoo!

Thanks Jayne for the different prospective. It's good to remember we all can come at this "problem" from different directions. The sharing of that info is helpful to us all in our mutual goal and the different approaches gives us a broader base to work from.

Thanks to Sonora Silkies for her expert genetic advice. You rock Suze! and we really are glad to have your experience here.

For those of you who want to develop a different color remember...we are a new breed. We have adopted the Silkie standard as our basic starting point but..we can make what ever changes we want to make so, if you like Partridge birds, go for it! You need to be responsible for "defining" your choice ie: writing the standard for your color but, hey, part of the fun!
( & on a purely selfish note...I won't fell so guilty having to cull all the red birds from my lines if they have somewhere useful to go!)

PBJ - we have a gal here in Az who is trying to develop NN Sizzles. Send me an eddress privately if you'd like me to pass it on to her so you can connect. Your Tina bird is a VERY nice start!

Kelly Kate - Yes, Sizzle and you could be part of the "develop the Sizzle partridge" program is your interested!

Pampered - Really like your smooths. I'm partial to the bearded ones myself! Good start!

Love seeing you all on this topic!!!

Sarah

I'm out of town for a couple of days delivering a foster dog to TX. If someone could please send me privately direction on how to post pics on this site I plan to do new photos on Monday & would love to put up some F5 pics.

thanks

Aye - blue red and black red chicks THIS WAYYYYY - shooting for gold birchens in blue and black and what the heck maybe splash ... I can write that standard.

Sarah LOL, I put the little black hen in with the silkied serama boy... major chuckle...

He's Red or Brown Red... of course she's not laying yet but she was getting picked on more than the others in the yard and he needed a companion. Can't just dump him out there with the others, the delawares would eat him as a bug.

New question:
I have several chicks (10 so far) that hatched last night. All of them are children of my showgirl - although none of them are NN (I'm seriously surprised)

My question is - almost all of them have 4 toes instead of 5. How much should I let that affect who I decide to keep? Its funny that the one with the best feet is the only gold based one. The rest are blue, blue and more blue.

Other than the toe count they all look pure silkie at this point. Black skin, walnut comb, beedy little soul stealing black eyes - you get the picture

On a side note the first one of my BCM X cuckoo marans is a feather legged GIRL!!!! I love sexlink barring

Update on the chicks - Except for the ones the broody has I have looked them over and everyone looks to be growing in smooth hard feathers!!!!!

Yay!!!! I am going to band them and keep track of them. Hopefully the two blues will be all blue this time. The rest are actually black.

I ended up with 21 chicks all together. 5 were NN, 5 are a cross between my BCM roo and cuckoo maran and one is pure silkie. There were 5 gold based birds and 2 are blue.
Unfortunately we had to put one down and one died right after hatching. Then one of the hens scalped two of the broodies chicks (both NN) One died and one survived and seems to be doing good. He was scalped and had a hole between his neck and shoulder. It's amazing how tough these lil' guys are. They are now in a seperate cage, but I think mom is anxious to take them out for a stroll.

Ok, i'm finding out that what I have is a smooth sizzle. She is 3 months old and has dark skin with 5 toes. She is also a lavender splash i'm told. I've been calling her a lavender splash cochin banty because the person I got her as an egg from said that is what to call her. She is a mix of birchen, frizzle, silkie, cochin bantam. I think he said there where a couple more mixed in too but she is just beautiful in my opinion. I cna't seem to take a god enough picture to do her beauty true justice but here is what I got.
This was taken last week

Here she is at 2 months

This one is at about 1 month

What do you think I should breed her with? In person she looks like a ball of feathers with a head, but in the picture her legs look long and she don't look so round.
