I look for show breeders, to find good quality pure bred stock of any breed. The hatcheries just don't have pure lines, they mix with production layers to increase numbers, and this has an adverse effect on the breed. They get more and more like leghorns, or whatever egg production bred they are mixing with.
Pathfinders and Gatekeeper both have some very nice non-hatchery Buckeyes, and there are some other BYC'ers who do, too, I can't recall the names right off, though.
