Marvin...Hi I am the owner of Iggy, the little male Jeff was asking you about. Iggy I hatched from eggs I brought back from Cyn's house....Delaware over BR (Wynette is the boy's mother and she is a gorgeous BR) So thanks for clarifying because I certainly do not want a Tiny offspring because that hen is crazy but that is another thread entirely. LOL

I have a genetics question for you....Cyn and I are both confused by this one and even the genetics calculators could not figure this one....The sire is the same Delaware rooster who sired these babies from this thread and the hen is a pure splash amaraucana....this is the progeny of that pairing, any idea where this pattern of markings came from. The black in the barring has the noticeable green sheen of a true black.

Meet Storm

when you mean a pure splash you mean a black bird that has two copies of the blue gene? or.... if thats the case the Rooster should have been Blue Barred instead, but somehow he looks almost black barred right? some genes affect the expression of blue, and some blues can look nearly black, but this cant be seen because Splash(which is just two copies of the blue gene on a extended black birds) interesting bird you have

Yes, the mother is splash, black with two copies of the blue gene, out of a BBS Ameraucana flock- this is the mother of that rooster Cetawin posted the picture of-his sire is my Delaware.

The sire, my Isaac, who is the only LF sire here, until Indy and his brothers get busy with the hens:

Then if those are the only possible sires, then somehow the effect of blue on the barred pattern have been inhibited by other genes.. what genes? its a mistery.. sorry, as you may also know, blue is incomplete dominant and also incomplete pentrants(other genes affect its expression)

Marvin he is without question black barred....not a blue. I expected a blue barred bird and little storm hatched with not a hint of blue and voile' I have my sweet oddity. Sadly we cannot compare him to other babies from that pairing because Storm is the only one to ever hatch....every other egg from that hen have been infertile or a quitter even since I have hatched Storm so he is it we think.

Here are two other shots of him for you sorry his beautiful white was dust bath dirty

he is a sweet boy and extremely protected because he is the only one but we were curious how he came to be because it makes no sense to either of us. hahahaha

this just goes to show you that while we can predict the outcome of a cross with about 99% chance of accuracy, here comes mother nature and show us that 1% to our face and says: I do as I please...!!!
That's just what I always say, Marvin. Genes are little gremlins, playing tricks on us when we least expect it.

Pics of Indy today. I realize that he has his late Uncle Rex's eyes. He's certainly as tall or taller than he was, and may even turn out to be a larger rooster.

Here is a close up of Rex, may he rest in peace, brave guy died defending his hens from a copperhead.
