Delaware x Buff Brahma Chick Hatched Today (Pic)

This chick was almost crushed to death as it was zipping by its broody BR mama (first timers, sheesh) and I rescued it. She did the same thing with the next pure Delaware chick and it's in the house recovering, with its innards superglued back inside. Bad Dottie!!! She had completely squished out the yolk sac on the Brahma baby and we at first thought the intestines with it, but fortunately, it was only some goopy membrane. We detached the yolk sac and brought it inside and it looks as if it's going to live.

Sired by my Delaware rooster, Isaac, it's mother is my 5 1/2 yr old Buff Brahma, Caroline. It has what appears to be a pea comb, however, no feathers on the legs at all. Caroline is a hatchery Brahma and doesn't have a lot herself, though. Will it look like a pea combed Delaware with some rust color leaking through or what?

The DelaBrahma:

The laid-back Daddy with my DH; excuse his ratty hackles-he has one hen who plucks them constantly, poor guy:

Mama Caroline--haven't had a chick of hers since her daughter, Glenda, years ago out of my Blue Orp:

any more pics of them? they should all be eb/eb brown looking but some how they look heterozygous wheaten eWh/eb

That was the only chick I got out of the Del x Buff Brahma so far and it died, Marvin. I have another due to hatch in two weeks and will post a pic if it makes it to hatch. This broody is more dependable, having raised five clutches previous to this one.

And that first timer is still confused. She won't eat well, acts like she is grieving almost, for something she treated like an alien intruder. Poor hen doesn't know which end is up. Hope she doesn't cull herself since she is a fabulous heritage Barred Rock hen out of Stukel lines. You just never know with a first time broody what she's going to do.

well the hen on my avatar went broody 4 times before she knew how to sit on the eggs(smashed them) then she tried to raise her only chick for the first time but was not successful, but the second time she did well, I knew she could be a good mother because she acted as a mother when she was only 5 months old to a lonly chick I placed with her..

Very nice of you to remember, thank you! I put off posting, but my very experienced broody crushed her chick as well. I couldn't believe it. She never even started her practice food call she always does days before the hatch. We found it dead the morning of Day 21, in the zipped shell, just like my first timer broody.

I suppose Nugget sat because of her internal directive, but really wasn't in the mood for motherhood again, though I really don't understand why she acted this way. This was her 6th time and she's always been the best broody you could imagine, even keeping one chick until he was 15 weeks old and I had to rehome him. She's back with her flock and has almost completely stopped clucking. She never tried to go back on a nest when I returned her to the group the next day.

I have three of Caroline's eggs in the hatching egg collection in the basement-she's still laying 3-4 eggs each week at 5 1/2 years old, but I have no idea how long that will last. I don't have any broodies to take them right now and I really don't want to start up the bator for it. My three broodies are on Days 14 and 13, respectively, so I'll have to wait for another one to try again.
