Delawares from kathyinmo

I don't know, guys. I felt so confident the other day. Now I'm not to sure these really are the Final Three. Particularly the one on the left.

Final Decision Day will be soon, so I want to get this sorted ASAP.

That's Big Brassy on the left, Mr. Fatty in the middle, and The New Guy on the right. Posing weird because the entire laying flock followed me over to their pen expecting treats, and I had literal seconds between this interested pose and the mating dancing.

Clearly The new guy isn't as full as the other two, but I believe he has the best color of the whole batch of this year's cockerels, and his legs are super sturdy, so I'm thinking he might have "big bones" under there. I do see some black primary wing feather showing, but it is no worse than his sire in that regard. He also stands with his legs a little close. But again: Best Color Of The Bunch ... see his fluff, hackles & tail here ... Maybe he could be useful in that regard?

I'm more concerned about Big Brassy. What was previously a question mark, as in "Is he brassy?" is looking more like an exclamation point. Wow! Is he brassy!

Consider these two top-down photos, Big Brassy on the left, Mr. Fatty on the right. I'm really thinking That's Not Dirt on the left. Terrible photos, terrible light, terrible iPhone camera pulled out of a dirty pocket, but still.

That color worries me. So does the way his body narrows behind his shoulders. Mr. Fatty does not narrow at all from front to back. (At this point I'm really wanting to SQUEEZE Mr. Fatty.)

Big Brassy looks a lot like PapaDel, except he is way more dingy. I could try to find another cockerel of this "type" (whiter body, black feathers in the tail) to swap with Big Brassy so I still end up with two of each color type. As much as I love the barring in The New Guy's tail, we're wondering if maybe the blacker feathers in the male's tail will help with getting proper tails on the females ... so I'd like to have something to act as back-up bird to PapaDel in that regard.

Opinions, please.

And thanks for all the support!

Yep. Unless I swap one out with Big Brassy. There is a drooling line of potential diners forming who are tired of my dithering.
Hey Leslie, not sure if I can make it up this weekend will know in the next day or two. If you can wait on the culling till I come I would be happy to look them over again and give you my opinion. From the pics, I would not use the brassy cockeral unless he was my only option. I think your assessments are pretty right on.

How much black do the pullets you plan on using have? Most of mine have too much black so I am wanting to use a lighter mate in one cross to hopefully help improve that. Take a good look at your pullets before making your decisions. I keep reminding myself that breeding the best to the best is not always the correct thing to do to make improvements.

At least with the pullets we cull them into the laying flock, so we can change our mind about them later. The males ... not so much.

Are your people, 'er diners processing their own, or do you process and sell? I'm picking up 24 hatching eggs next Friday, and already trying to imagine where I'll fit 12 freezer chickens!
Counting your roosters before they hatch?

I hope you have a great hatch!
