Delawares from kathyinmo

Here is a quick video of how we feed the chicks so the big birds don't steal their feed. That's their broody clucking on top of the frame. Yes, the one Gold Sexlink who is molting is always right there mooching, as is the trim little white bird with the big floppy comb (she's a hatchery California White, and she is one of our "special" birds with her own set of coop rules). Broody is some kind of mutt we hatched here, and she is a really good mother.

There are so many chicks we had to add an extra wing to the brooder.

I love it when the broody hovers and you see all the little orange legs under her breast.

The chicks are getting a lot more active and eating a lot more. I think in this one the chicks were hoping I'd brought some treats.

I wish the two Black Copper Marans were easier to photograph ... their little fuzzy legs are to die for cute.

I set the last of the Mr. Fatty eggs under a broody last night. Tonight I'll switch him out for PapaDel, then wait a couple weeks before I set more eggs. Broodies willing, of course.

I thought about being worried about him, but then I noticed how round he is.

I was pretty much force-feeding them at that point for the sake of my own entertainment.

All chicks are "he" chicks until feathers appear. Then they are all "she" chicks until proven otherwise. Funny how that works.

I tried to make a video with a little dish of food on top of the platform, and one underneath. The broody will grab a mouthful of feed and cluck and drop it down to the chicks, which is super cute. But when I stepped back to do the video the rest of the flock dove for the dish, and all you see/hear in the video is me shooing them. And super loud peeping objections from the chicks.

Well the hatch is nearly done I think. I'll give it til tomorrow but it looks like a 50/50 dea. Which is fine.

CR's did good, Dels I'm not sure yet. Maybe 7/14.

I've been finding takers for the previous two hatches since these chicks take priority and DD will be caring for them while we're away.

Weather is warming up, so folks are moving about in the stores.

Well, I'm still searching for some nice Dels. amyone have any that will be for sale? I'll pay good money to get some nice birds. I'm in North GA

I don't know any one your way- Micheal Newman is in Panhandle of FL - don't know how close that is to you.
I am not hatching this year due to a move - just eggs but for pick up only.
There are links at bottom that have breeder lists you might try there.
Good Luck - its great breed and this line is very promising.

Say WHAT?!? Not hatching?!? Very sad, though understandable if you're moving. Please don't give up, though.

That's all my chicks so far this year. Got more coming this week, though.

Aw! that make me miss them already - Love hatching [ except the stage from 2 weeks to free range LOL]
We have actually moved to the retirement farm- now we need to deal with 35 years of accumulation of valuble hoarder junk , fix it up and sell so I can get back to hatching, garden, fishing and hunting. We built a pond last summer so hope to get that stocked this year.

That sounds nice!

You're so right. Chicks are a pain in the bum. These guys are to the stage where they're constantly locking themselves in various jails and I have to go pardon them. Peep peep.

For the first time this year I have chicks with dirty bottoms ... all below the vent so no real worries. I had been making their scrambled eggs with milk. I switched to water to see if that clears things up. Broody does NOT want me messing with her chicks.

And I've still had only two broodies. The other is sitting on a big clutch of eggs. I need two broodies NOW because Zanna is hatching chicks for me this week!

If you figure out how to deal with a houseful of stuff, let me know. I'm only about half-way through dealing with my parent's stuff. It's rather draining work so I work slowly!
