Depluming Mites And How To Treat Hens???

My favorite hen, Big Red, who is in my profile pic, had a large patch of bare, red skin on her breast and belly. I bet it was depluming mites, but this is the first time I am hearing about what causes it. I think the depluming mites eventually kill the birds by sucking out all the nutrients from their bodies. Or maybe weakening the birds' immune systems. Either way, Big Red died several years ago. Hopefully I have learned this information on how to treat early enough to save the bird I have now who has very red patches by her butt, and many broken feathers. Thank you Two Crows! :love

I am dealing with a bad case of deplumming mites. Have 3 hens with signs of it but this one looks terrible. I’ve been treating them with ivermectin for a month now. My other hens (6) look fine.

Are you seeing any improvement yet? I've given 8 doses of ivermectin to my two Rhode Island Reds. The one who looked the worst still looks bad and has been losing weight. I'm supplementing them heavily with Fresh Eggs Daily probiotics, which seems to be helping them, but waiting for molting and hoping for the best. Good luck to you!

No bare patches of skin and no sores. Wish an expert on here could tell me so I know how to treat.I’ve done a post and an expert or 2 have weighed in and they haven’t said it’s depluming mites so maybe they Arnt sure. Yah it’s bad whatever it is.

Ivermectin shots and oregano drink helped cure my elderly rooster of depluming feather mites recently. Don't know whether he'll get them again when it warms up. The cold weather may have helped kill off the depluming feather mites, too. None of my other 12 chickens got them. His immune system is old, and he is a mean boy so doesn't get to go out and take dust baths like the others, in fresh soil. I did bring in fresh soil for him, into his run, too.
Can you tell me what the oregano drink is? Would love to try. Thanks. Super happy your boy is healed from the mites!!!
