UPDATE! Of the 18 eggs set 10 days ago, only 2 were not viable. I cracked them open and one was infertile while the other...the yolk was broken down and had a very unpleasant odor. Lol. Of the 16, many are doing great. I can see movement & veins. Such a difference from a couple days ago. They must be getting big inside there! Some are pretty hard to see (green eggs) but they got a pass because I could make out good veins and life. Yay!

UPDATE ON MPC: of the 9 set from Mypetchicken.com, 5 are definitely viable, 1 is questionable and can't see anything in 3. It's only day 5 for them so there's still hope. The Marans eggs are so difficult to see but pretty sure I see life in 1 of them.

Excited! So glad it doesn't take 9 months for this process. I'd go stir crazy. Lol

Almost seems a lifetime away! Especially for a first timer who failed her first time. Lol

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that the air sacs on the MPC eggs is very hard to find. The other eggs are so easy. Like day and night. I don't think I see them, then I might spot it. As I spin the egg, it's hard to keep track of it. So glad I followed Rubys advice by setting them upright without the auto turner. So far I think 5 out of 9 is pretty good. Sure hope they pull through. Really looking forward to the Chocolate Orpington ano the Salmon Favorelle.

Yes, I'm a nervous wreck! - Over some chicken eggs! LOL, what does that say about me

....I still have a few blues that I didn't see through very well. I candled one last night and I could see it does have a chick! But I was nervous I might do something to damage the live eggs, so I stopped at that point. I'll candle on day 14 and remove any that aren't doing anything.

I should've followed the same advice about not turning for a couple days...I think it looks like I have about 7-10 viable eggs out of 41. From what I can tell... I gave them a pep talk! "No early quitters!"

Chocolate Orps would be sooo gorgeous! I did have Salmon Faves for a few years. Last year I had a hawk that started picking them off, it took me a while to figure out what was happening. So, I re-homed all of them and just didn't have any chickens for a whole year - maybe the hawk will move on. Now I'm rebuilding a little flock. The Faves were a good bunch, very docile and friendly. On the weekends, I'd make us lunch plates and bring them out to the shop or barn, the chickens would see me and come running and wait for me to give them something! LOL, fun chickens!

Lol! I do the same thing. I bring out a bowl of tomatoes, corn, blueberries, cut grapes, lettuce, cooked rice or whatever I have on hand that day. They surround me like hungry dogs. Lol. I love it!

I actually candles quite a bit at first but backing off. I too, am afraid to handle them too much.

The dark ones, I'm not sure I see movement but the area has grown darker. Assuming that's good news!

I am new to this as well. Maybe that's why I'm a medler. I am so fascinated with hatching eggs! With that being said- I have been watching my eggs faithfully. I candle them as often as it calls for. Candled this morning and one appeared to have developed a blood ring. I was heart broken. I have worked so hard with these babies. I decided to open the egg and just see what happened....

I saw the baby, it's foot was moving, and the heart was beating. I was wrong! It was alive and well.

I'm assuming that maybe the blood vessels continue to get darker as the baby grows.
I won't do that again. However, it was a learning experience that I am so thankful for.

Oohhh, I'm so sorry - it was a blood island you saw, a good thing... Think of it this way - a blood ring, goes all the way around the shell. A blood island is more like a line or an incomplete circle.

Just to be on the safe side, I won't remove any until they smell bad...so far I don't have that, but I do realize there are a few clears that just aren't going to develop.

Now that I think about it, I didn't smell it. Reckon I will next time. I am so afraid that will happen to me. I totally can relate. I feel I've put so much effort into every one that if they die, I feel bad.

Sites like this help. I don't feel alone and I learn from others. That's for the info on the blood island. I didn't know that. I see some that have a dark pool but it doesn't go all the way around. I wondered about that. So glad you said it. Now I know to watch out for it.

I totally understand, if I do anything to destroy one of them, I'd feel terrible about it - poor things, they've had a rough time of it!

Agreed, if it wasn't for BYC, it would be difficult to find the help a person needs - it's like one-on-one guidance

Yeah, I had a couple that had a dark line or area, but now I can't see it anymore and one of them I can see some movement - I'm so afraid to even touch them!
