Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

Pics
I bet that many of us have a 'special' child.
I have a terrier mix that has never learned his name (9yrs old). He has a VERY specific routine that he follows every single day and is flumuxed all day if ANY part of it gets altered. He's not stupid, he can figure out how to get what he wants - he just seems to choose wether something is to his liking before he 'understands' it or not.

Keep the Derp stories coming! The world is a better place for ALL our special children.

I used to have a special needs chicken. Hazel; she was a blind Burr Orpington hen. Sweetest thing, came when you called, sat for hours but would listen to the noises us humans make. I helped her eat and drink alot, which is why she lived to be so old. (I don't know her age, she is a rescue chicken)

She died a month ago due to a tumor in her throat, blocking her airway.

Love you Hazel.

I Now have one other buff orpington, partially blind and a Barred Rock with a broken foot.

Jennifer,
You could make this a children's book. Your illustration and writing skill are a wonderful gift, I often wished I possessed. thanks for the wonderful story!

God Bless you

Not too many new Derp stories and photos... life has been very busy and the weather for photos has been lousy. I make art and jewelry for a living and I've been putting in 12+ hour days to try and get things done in time for the holidays! Eep!

Special thanks for everyone that has bought Derp stuff. I hope it brings you much enjoyment and know that every penny of it goes right back into her care!

Derperella is slowly maturing, and turning into an adult chicken. The Food Lady has noticed that lately Derp actually squats-- rarely-- but that means in theory that her body is getting ready to make eggs!
Then again, though, her 'sister' Coho has been squatting for over a month, and no eggs from her. The Food Lady's rooster-- I mean, husband-- says that is because they are 'fancy french chickens' and that they do things their own way.

On Sunday, Derperella did something that made the Food Lady laugh until tears came out of her eyes. Derp would have thought that was a pretty weird reaction if she was paying attention. Derp had jumped up on top of her 'sister', Coho, and rode around on her back for a few minutes. Coho was extremely confused. What on earth was Derp doing??!
Moments later, Derp fell off again but the antics were not over. Not by a long shot! Immediately, Derperella started hopping, flapping straight up into the air, and kicking her feet out at Coho! Derp probably wasn't just showing off her special extra toes or fancy foot feathers; it seems Derp was trying to be dominant over Coho! Coho, on the other hand, was not very impressed. She watched Derperella with some confusion for a moment, then stood up very tall, roused her hackle feathers, and charged into Derp for a chest bump. Well, Derp was really charged up now!! Instead of bumping Coho back, or kicking at her, or retreating (all acceptable reactions to a dominance confrontation), Derp felt that the best reaction was to start hopping and flying over the top of Coho repeatedly. Back and forth. Completely and utterly confused, Coho walked away to eat some more grass, while Derp hopped, ran, and flew back and forth by herself. It was quite a display!

In the end, Derperella went back to looking for Things to Eat that live on the patio...

I wish you hadn't written that- when pepsi comes out my nose, it burns!! Derp is great she knew by hopping back and forth over Coho she wouldn't risk any injuries and Coho would get discombubalated (??) and leave. Are you sure that Derp knows she is a hen??

I just read the whole thing! How funny! I think i might need a Derp shirt!! I just love her facial expressions!!
