Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

I love to read about Derp as much as the next person on this thread. She's a great chicken. I however have to wonder about peoples desire to actually have a chick be like Derp. She's all cute and adorable now, but IF I remember correctly, and I could go back and read from the beginning, that is not something I personally would want to have to deal with. It was a lot of work for Nambroth, and bless her for sharing and taking the time and effort to save her, but to hope for such a thing to happen to your chicks just to get a your own personal Derperella... And I am sure I am about to get crap. But I would hope that you all just wish for the cuteness, the adorableness, and the absolute joy that is Derp, and not the defects that have created the ever addicting Derperella.

I agree. I love Derp and I hope my chick has her personality, but I would not want to wish for a chick with those health problems. We should remember that Derp had some problems and that we should not wish for any chick to be that way. I am not trying to criticize anyone, and I don't think NovaAman is either, it is just something to think about.

Here is my little one all fluffed up.

and again with her sib climbing up my shirt.

They stayed with me today because mama wanted to take the three older sibs out for a jaunt and they just werent up to it. They slept most of the time and were a joy to babysit.

Lobzi, they are just so dang cute! I have got to get a pic of my little faverolles chickies that hatched out yesterday... Well, only one is pure, and the other 2 are half GLW. BUT, I can not tell who is who! They all look like fav chicks, beards and all! Just to cute... And it will be TRY, because their mama cochin bantam that hatched them is a vicious 1 pound terror!

Great read novaman......I have quite a few special needs chickens and yes they do take alot of extra one on one time, but for me I would not change it at all. All my birds have found me and I guess it was for this reason......LOVE my goofy birds. :love

Yep! That's one reason why I won't breed her, though I am surprised to say that many people have asked me to. Why risk letting other chicks suffer? I can tell you that it was no party for Derp when she was a chick. If she was any worse off I considered putting her down-- there is a line between fighting to survive and 'suffering'. Fortunately Derp was a 'fight to survive' chick and it worked out okay, but it might not have. I rather doubt she remembers it, but even temporary suffering is to be avoided if we are able to do so.

We can all celebrate the silly, "Derpy" things that our healthy chickens do every day.

WELL SAID! Derperella was "gifted" to you by the higher powers, and you chose the right path for her.
You are enjoying every moment of her UNIQUE, life and she is staring right back at you with adoration.
The best part is the fact that you are sharing her with all of us......You done good grasshopper. :love

SO>>>>>what is Derp up to these days????

I think one of my new chicks might be a little 'Derpish'. She (at least I HOPE she's a she) is a black copper maran and she's been a little 'off' since day one. I got her and her sister (a wheaten maran) from a swap at 1 week old. Hurra (the BCM) is smaller, always looks ruffled and rumpled, wanders off by herself alot, spends lots of time standing on top of the feeder looking at the wall while everyone else is gorging on the goodies. She doesn't protest when the bigger birds use her for a step stool, doesn't even move when they all gather under the light for a nap and she's getting shoved and stomped. In fact, she seems to like being at the bottom of the pile - although if she's late arriving she will just settle down on the edge of the group.
Here she is at 1 week. Her wing is down because she is in the process of falling through the bottom of the milk crate. Which just made her sit down with her little leg hanging out the bottom. Such a PLACID little thing! I hope she stays that way.

Encore, Pele!
Hmmm, my favorite poem, gotta get back to you on that...
Encore, ChirpyChick!
My favorite "Willy The Shake" (Thank you, Joni Mitchell,) is 'The Tempest'.
And thank you, Nambroth, for starting this thread about "our" dear Derp!
