"Designer" dogs or just plain old mutts?????

I know you were asking rhetorically, but the answer is, if you want a purebred dog to be used for breeding purposes who has won at least Best Of Breed and preferably Best In Group at Westminster, then it does, in fact, cost about $10-15,000.

My Pyr comes from a Westminster winner dad, and he was $1000 for pet quality. He could have won some little local shows, but he is small for his breed. We're working on some draft titles instead, and he is extremely good at livestock guarding and management. If he learns to be a little less skittish around odd noises, we might work on his therapy dog title as he's super-friendly. His cousin is the 2009 Westminster Best Of Breed, Impyrial's Love American Style.

My Newfie is distantly related to Josh, who won Best In Show at Westminster in 2004; she is show quality all the way, but the breeder only picks one puppy per litter and there were six in the litter--her brother was deemed more outgoing and friendly. She was $2000, and we're working on training for her water and draft titles.

I cannot fathom paying $10k for a mutt without a titled pedigree, however cute. Maybe if it was cloned from Lassie and grown in a test tube.

I am actually shocked that I got an answer to that question. The reason I used the westminster winner is that was the only dog I could think of that someone would probably pay a ton of money for. Very interesting.

I agree with you 100%. I'm also against breeding pure breeds sometimes. My Mom's friend breeds her bulldogs when she needs a little extra money, that frustrates me to no end. I hate the whole designer deal. My first dog was, and is, a mutt. There isn't anything designer about her, she looks downright funky! Responsible breeders get my ok if they don't do it excessively, but you see way too many dogs and cats being euthanized due to irresponsible breeding.

ok.I have to chime in here..if you are seeing parvo pups from a pet store it is the stores fault,,not the breeders,if they are buying pups from a parvo kennel they need to stop until it is under control..more then likely they need to clean up the store as that is probably where the parvo is comeing from, either way they can end it at or before it comes to the store..and if you work in a vet clinic you should know that just because a puppy has had shots does not mean it is 100% protected..and even less protected if they have only had 1-2 shots..

I think if someone wants to get a x-bred then they should be allowed to get one,and we are still in the USA where we have a few rights left,,which includes getting them from whatever source they chose...I dont know why people get in a tissy about where other people get there pets..

Well I definitely would not spend big money for a mutt. I probably wouldn't spend a lot for a pure breed either though. We got a dog when I was young. He was a total mutt. He had Border Collie, Australian shepard, German shepard, lab and who knows what else. We got him from in front of the grocery store , some people were giving away about 6 pups probably. He was a great dog. He lived for 17 years in good health until we had to put him down in the end. Like I said he was a great dog. I know that you all are not saying that mutts are not good dogs, and I agree with most that has been said, although I don't think that it is a terrible thing to sell pups. We probably will never get another dog unless we have a bunch of property for it to run around on and play. I would not want to have a dog chained in or kenneled in a small area for a long period of time. Well that is kind of my thoughts on this subject.

I vote they're mutts and used to be considered a oops by the breeder and given away rather quickly. Somebody just figured out how to make a buck off of their mistake and people fell for it hook, line and sinker.

ETA: I'd rather have a heinz 57 anyday of the week. They usually get the best traits of all the breeds they've got in them.

That is like saying you would rather have a chicken of completely unknown mixed breeding and biosecurity rather than buying a sex-link of known parentage and predictable outcome from a biosecure breeder, because Chicken A would somehow miraculously inherit only the best traits of all the chickens before it. If that was the case, we would all just let 'em mix it up like crazy and only the finest, most desireable traits would be able to propagate, because somehow all the undesireable traits would somehow be bred out through completely random breeding and no selection for improvement. Would never happen, not in chickens, not in dogs. Good dogs generally ahve good dogs. Good chickens generally have good chickens, regardless of what show ring their grandfather trotted around in fifteen years ago. If they are good, usually their pups are good, or chicks if it is chickens. most of them anyway.

Now once again I didn't read all the posts, but Please! They have them in chickens too. They're call "show girls" and "Frizzles" and "Naked necks" and mutts. Personally I like the "GoldenDoodles". I don't care for anything I have to bend down to pet, except Corgies. I love corgies, I want corgies, I will have corgies.
On the other hand some people don't care what their dog mates with. I had an aunt like that she didn't care ..............................
