we have to cut our flock of red sexlinks in half. they are six weeks. are there any desirable traits to look for with birds to keep or not to keep? For example one bird is roosting in the egg box. Should we get rid of that one? does size matter? any help would be appreciated.

There are things to look that indicate a good layer. But they only apply to those that are already laying.

I don't know of any way to tell how productive a chick is going to be before she grows up, sorry.

If it crows it probably wont be a very good egg layer.

I'm going to get rid of 2 of my Golden Comet sex-link chicks (they're 4 weeks old right now) and 4 of my Black S-L chicks (4 days old) because I had to get so many to get the ones I wanted. I have a very small city coop.

I'm handling the ones a lot that seem the most friendly and easiest to deal with. I'll keep the ones that are the most laid back and don't freak out over every little thing, since they have to be quiet so they don't disturb our crabby neighbors. So I guess you could say that personality is what I'm looking for right now. Egg production isn't that important to me right now. I just want good pets!

The eggs are just the frosting on the cake!
