Developing full life cycle of Jumbo Brown Coturnix (Quail)

Hello,
I am a new Homesteader developing the full life cycle of Jumbo Brown Coturnix (Quail) to increase my Self-Reliance for securing my food supply chain along with helping others to do the same through consulting and sales. I'm having a terrific amount of fun! So much joy! So much to learn!
I am in St. Louis, Missouri. I will be offering consultation through live video chats. I will be selling eggs for consumption, fertilized hatching eggs, 3-5 day old quail chicks, breeder quintets, live birds for falconeers, quail skins and quail wings for fly fishing lures, and possibly quail compost.
My current bloodlines are Jumbo Brown Coturnix from Myshire Farms and Southwest Gamebirds.
Excited to find this community!
Welcome to BYC!!

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome! 😊 I am so excited and blessed to find such a warm and supportive community with such a breadth of knowledge and commitment to having fun on this journey! 😍

I hope to contribute more and be more active soon! I am currently modifying and subdividing a Medium Brooder (40' x 39") from Dale's Quails so that it meets my needs of smaller hatches. Thank goodness brooder modifications pairs well with Cabernet 🍷on a Saturday night! 💃

Welcome!

I raise Myshire quail.
I find that at least 3 cages is needed to raise quail. 8 currently only have 4 cages set up.

Interesting! Are your quail different ages, having aggression issues, grouping breeder sets, or something else?

I have a Dale's Quails Small Brooder that has worked great for up to 18 Jumbo Brown Coturnix (Quail) from Day 1 to about 3 or 3 1/2 weeks. My first hatch was from Myshire Farms and my second hatch was from Southwest Gamebirds.

I have the Wynola Ranch 3-Tier Breeder cage which is awesome! My first hatch defied the laws of statistical probability. Jumbo Brown Coturnix reportedly hatch roughly 50/50 female/male, but I had 5 females and 13 males hatch which is a 28% female to 72% males. (Zach shared that they had an electrical fire, the quail stopped laying for a bit, and my eggs were hatched soon after they started laying, again. I have no idea whether that could affect the sex ratio). I had a 60% hatch rate for my first hatch of 30 shipped eggs, and my first time ever hatching eggs of any kind.

Zach at Myshire said I could keep all the extra males together after I selected the male for by breeder set. That worked great until they turned 6 1/2 weeks old and 3 males started attacking other males (pecking their heads, and mounting/humping them). I then had to quickly sort the 3 aggressors, 4 victims, and 4 non-aggressor/non-injured (so that I have back up breeding males in case something happens to my best breeder male). One male was rescued 3-4 days before this event. (Nemo hatched on his own, but has a bad leg. He did great until 6 weeks when he was pecked in the head. I thought maybe it was because he was obviously weaker.) I was grateful that I was able to subdivide my Wynola Ranch cage. I had originally bought 2 of the metal cage dividers. I had to quickly "Macgyver it" and make more dividers out of cardboard and zip tie them into place. I have subsequently purchased 4 more metal dividers.

I butchered the 3 most aggressive males at 7 1/2 weeks because they were crowing all through the night. At 7 1/2 weeks, one weighed 10.1 ounces and two weighed 9.3 ounces. Nice!

As I fill up my Wynola cage with breeder sets, I will have to come up with another solution. Maybe just a cat carrier and a faster trip to the freezer farm!
